Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
Okay, question for the group, at least the guys with 2 cylinder stuff. I am working towards being able to rebuild starters and stock some starter parts. Research so far seems to indicate I can sell an MC/40/early 420 starter with all NEW internal components including armature and fields for $250 outright. If I cut the armature and reuse the original fields, it would be cheaper, but I would prefer to do all new components. I would then also start stocking starter repair parts, which up til now has been difficult due to inconsistent supplier issues, but think I have that issue resolved.
Eventually I would like to look into later 420/430/440 starters too including true 12 volt conversions, as well as generators, but have a few guys that need the early starter right now.
Let me know your thoughts.

Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
I use my 40c a fair bit at night in the winter plowing and dragging trails. I would love to do a true 12v conversion so I could run some LED lights. I've looked high and low for 6V LEDs but they don't seem to exist. Plus it would be nice to eliminate the oddball 6V battery from the fleet (good 6V batteries, not talking the cheapo Tractor Supply ones, are getting hard to find locally). I haven't done the conversion because I've heard bad things about what 12v does to the stock starter.
Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
6 volt will be the first foray, then generators, then 12 volt conversions.
I have LED's on hand if you want them.

Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
Your testing my memory but i would say before trying to recut ametures i would see if you can find a unit i believe was called a growler to see if its worth the trouble..Thats testing my memory from the 70s when i was doing electrical study at the Voc/tech school i did for automotive. Most of those are usually good and wont require doing more than a slight cut to get a good surface again. The second part is something i never got into but i did have a local shop do it once and it was invaluable to me, which was redoing a starter drive. I believe he glass disassembled it and glass beaded it.. it looked brand new and the only other option i had was buying a whole starter for a Ford yuppy tractor i had.I tried to locate a drive for my 440 ICD and that didnt go well so if you could do that that would be a huge service i would think. Good luck with your venture.!!!

Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
Yeah, never been able to find a growler locally, any I see online are $500 or so for a good quality used American made one.. I have an armature lathe, but figuring labor to disassemble the armature and drive, the cut the armature and mica, plus $500 for a growler it might just about wash out on installing new armature. Plus with these armatures being 60 years old, not sure it is worth the risk.
If this new supplier is as good as they appear, hoping to have parts available for all of the 2 cylinder crawler including the diesel. Probably have the first shipment of rebuild parts in a couple weeks. I have 2 guys looking for starters already, so will know more in a couple weeks. Ordered an HD 500 watt soldering gun last night, hoping it will work for soldering the fields so I don't have to used the old soldering copper.

If you have a good market for them it would be better in the long run for sure. I think the demand is there for sure.

Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
Lavoy, do you have 6v LED lights or just the bulbs? My 40c didn't come with lights, so I'm just running the cheap 6V reproduction lights that I don't believe have replaceable bulbs. If they are full lights what is the pricing?
Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
No, I have replacement LED bulbs to go in the original bulb type lights, and should be the same as your repro lights use.

PS if your doing starters you might as well do generators too.

Re: Rebuilt starters and starter parts question for the group
That is the next thought. Want to get a couple sets of starter rebuild parts and see how that goes. Then going to do a couple generators.
Already have 2 starters sold, and one generator if I can get the parts I want.

Supposed to have pieces coming to convert the 6 volt starters to 12 volt. That's going to be an interesting project, parts will be in next week.
