I just received an ignition/light switch, that the dealer said would fit a JD 40C. The original switch has a resistor on the back of it and the new one does not. Does any one know if i can use this one or do i need one with a resistor.
Herb.

Herb,
The new one still should have had the resistor, not sure what they did there. What is the part number on the box?

Okay, I was thinking you meant John Deere dealer. I don't know what to tell you on that one. I would guess that you could figure out a way to make it work with some fiddling around.

I do have some new switches on hand with the resistor if you need one.

I went ahead and installed the switch without the resistor. It seems to work ok. The best i can tell, the resistor cuts back on the amount of charg that goes into the battery when the lights are off and when the lights are on the resistor is being bypassed. I would rather use the correct one if you have one. Let me know what the price is.

Herb,
Resistor should only be for dimming the headlights. On an MC, it will control charge rate, but a 40 has a voltage regulator and should not use the ignition switch for that function.
