JD40 for sale

Post by tuney443 » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:45 am

I just saw an ad in Craigslist in the Hudson Valley,NY section for a 40 crawler dozer that was bought new by the farmer and only used it one week a year for 45 years pushing off corn silage. It also has a rear winch. He's asking $4500. Sounds like a real good buy.

I hope it is exactly what the ad says. That list, along with some others, has gotten so loaded with scammers and fake ads that I no longer waste my time looking.
I lived without it for a long time, I guess I can live without looking now.
NEVER reply to any email address on those list. If they are scammers, they collect all kinds of info, can place a virus on your computer.
A "virus" does not always mean that it affects your computer usage. They can place a virus bug on there that collects all of your email list and other info, they in turn sell those names and email addresses without you ever having a clue.
It gets crazier by the day and no one seems to be able to do much about it.

If you're that paranoid about scams and virus's on Craglist from a farmer who has an old JD40 who probably just started to learn how to operate a computer or he had his grandson post his rig for him,you probably don't want to be on a computer at all.I use Craigslist everyday, both for advertising my business, for selling from soup to nuts, and for finding all sorts of things.Never had a problem except for those damn flaggers who have too much time on their hands. Not saying it can't happen, but it's no different really than any other advertising on line medium.Somebody will scap that old 40 up ASAP--just wanted to share the info here first so a member here could get a shot at it.

I certainly was not directing anything at you, as I assume you are not one of the growing number of scammers.

You assumed correctly.Been in the excavating biz for 36 years now.I knew you weren't directing anything at me,you were just cautioning members, however your mistrust of Craigslist in general is totally without merit as there are much more legitimate users than scammers.Otherwise,I wouldn't advertise there.Last year alone,I picked up 3 new septic systems and numerous topsoil orders from CL.

I just found one the other day, I asked a question on a couple of ATV's that were near me. Only thing that was near me was the town in the add. The 4 wheelers did not exist, and by the wording in the reply message, highly unlikely the seller was anywhere in the US. Not a condemnation of Craig's list, there are ads like this on many different sites, but buyer beware.

Lavoy,

As you likely realize, I was simply saying in my own words, "buyer beware". And also for those that are not aware, NEVER EVER reply directly to an email address in any ad on any list unless you know for certain who it is. They even get creative and make email addresses that "look" like one you would know, but it has a small change that is not readily noticable.
I will not crowd the post with all of the possibilties, but basically they set up Phishing emails. Many times the scammed person never knows that they were scammed. Only if they go deeper and get and use personal information to get in to bank accounts, credit card accounts, etc.
It is bigger than some may want to realize.

I've been using Craigs List for a couple of years and have yet to have any problems. Most of the things I'm looking for are in the farm stuff. I'm out in west Mn not too far from Lavoy (I'm still going to get with you just so I can see your stuff!).

I am guessing the crawler in question here just showed up on Ebay a couple days ago. Opening bid is $3500, and by the pics, it was used way more than one week a year. Says it has smoked for 15 years, grousers are quite worn, in general looks kind of ratty.

craigs list

I have used craigs list several times, both posting and buying and it seems that about 50% of the time you end up dealing with a scammer. Too bad poeple have to ruin a good thing.
