I am not about knocking other folks crawlers, but I wonder why someone would go to all of the trouble to paint one up like that and use the wrong decals and wrong color scheme. Do they not know any better? Are they trying to catch someone that goes for "shine" like unsuspecting used care buyers?
It really looks like a decent crawler. I would want to know the most about the engine condition, drive train, finals, measurements on the under carriage, you know, the things that really matter.
The battery door on the left is gone and there appears to be welding on the seat frame. Not show stoppers but not a crawler that has had TLC either.
I NEVER go by tachometer readings. The cables break, tachs get replaced, etc.

Maybe they thought the correct police would never find them on the back side of Pikes Peak and painted it the way they thought John Deere should have painted it. Yes the auction could have more info on the powertrain for us gearheads. Having never seen a used "care" I wouldn't know about them.

From what I undrstand there was no real "one" paint scheme from John Deere. I dont remember the website. But I read that John Deere would supply you any paint scheme you wanted from the factory. All yellow, all green, variations of how the yellow stripe was on the hood and or the front grille. The 420 for all arguments was the most difficult tractor to restore as everyone could restore the paint to what they had and everyone whom thought they knew would say it was wrong?

The standard Deere paint schemes was "standard", and if ordered ag green, they did not variate from the standard. Where Dubuque was different from Waterloo, is they would paint the crawler a custom color within reason, other than just industrial yellow.
Given the wide moldboard, and the tilt cylinder, it would only be a short amount of time before something breaks in the tilt castings.

Hi,
All I see wrong with the paint is that the cutting edge is painted yellow. The rest looks right enough to me. I won't say about the shade as most folks digital photo equipment is rarely color calibrated so one can never tell anyway.
The decal is wrong and in the wrong place, of course.
Yes, that *is* a wide blade and that tilting arrangement is just going to bust into pieces.
Note how far forward the front idlers are on the track frame. My question is: will the tilt scheme bust before a track winds up shucked off?
later!

shinnery, thanks for catching my typo. I am certain that you understood it should have been "car", not "care".
If you like typos, stay tuned, you will have fun because in spite of having an excellent education, I am still human and make typos.
He can paint it pink with green stripes, but if he wants good money for it and wants to taunt is merits, it needs to be a resemblance of something that JD actually painted at some point.
As for as I can tell, with all of the customizing that Dubuque did, they never painted one like that.

Hi,
I must be blind or something. What is wrong with that, other than the decal?
-Edit -
I just spotted where Lavoy says the track pads and chains ought to be green.
I can't say what color mine were as I have no paint at all on any of my track chains or pads! Might be some hanging on still on the undersides in a nook or cranny somewhere, but the dirt over the decades has removed all the paint wherever the dirt went. Track chains and pads look 'right' to me bare, anyway!
Then, too, I've seen so many industrial machines over the years that yellow painted tracks seems common to me. If you're all over the tracks and frames with a can of yellow paint, then it all winds up yellow!
Heck, if I ever repainted mine I'd paint just the frame. If some got ont the pads and chains, then that'd be yellow, too. I'd not be taking them off and so it'd all get yellow. But, then the next time I used it, the tracks would be bare again, anyway!
Not that I'm going to paint mine. I like it as it is - an old friend. It would look odd to me to be repainted.....
-End Edit-
It looks a lot like my 58 - when it still *had* the yellow paint on it, that is.
Now my yellow is faded to white, what's left of it.
The yellow on the tracks and frames is almost all gone from decades of use, but a close look reveals some spots of faded yellow paint still there. My green is so dark now, you'd think it's an Oliver, actually, with the now-white stripe on the hood...
Now, the shades of green and yellow might be off. I can't *really* tell because most everything on the web is off color shade-wise on my calibrated system. Most folks use digital cameras and whatnot and never think about 'colorspace' or color calibration. It looks pretty reasonable, though.
Additionally, mine has green paint over yellow for the direction reverser casting. Not for any other castings, just the DR. I figure they must have been out of green ones that day and took a yellow one off the shelf and painted it green. Or, maybe they always did that when an Ag 420 was ordered with a DR. I couldn't tell you, but I'd believe it either way.
Later!

I have actually seen this machine operate. I have seen a picture somewhere of my son sitting on it. My dad used to own a store in Victor,CO., which you have to pass thru Divide to get too. My dad took the picture of my son on it, while son was with him one summer. Best I remember it was faded green and yellow and it did not have that big a cutting edge. It would sit on road for a couple of days it would take to blade that road. It seems like the ranch was cut up for ranchettes and home lots as a expensive subdivision. This is all best as memory serves me as son was 7 or 8 at the time and now hes 23. Dad said he was going to put other son on it who was 11 or 12 and now 27, but when they went down the mountain two days later for store supplies, the road job was complete.
I had never seen a dozer like this and made my mind up then I'd like to have one, this year I got one my 1957 crawler loader. Small world.
