350 t4e3d owner needs help

Post by ey8675 » Mon Jun 06, 2011 6:15 pm

I am replacing the water pump. It's installed and noticed a leak right under the shaft going to the fan. There is a small hole where the water is coming from. No threads, just a smooth hole.

Anyone know what its for. Is it functional or could I jb weld it shut?

I can't make out the ser#...plate too worn.

If it is the hole I think it is it is telling you your pump needs to be rebuilt.

The hole is a assembly hole that tells the worker that the bearing can not be set any deeper. The other reason for the hole is that when the bearing goes bad it will let water drip out of there alerting you to the need for repair.

Plugging that hole will mean that as the pump goes further broken it will start to eat valuable parts you dont want destroyed. Best bet is to do it right and get it repaired.

If you have a grease zert on the pump you might try pumping some waterpump grease in it, to slow down the leak. That hole is informally known as the weep hole and needs to be kept open. It's purpose is to let water that gets past the waterpump seal leak to the outside and prevent it from leaking on into the crankcase. Water, antifreeze and engine oil don't mix very well especially in the vicinity of babbit bearings.
