regulator for jd350b
regulator for jd350b
Lavoy, does the regulator on these units do anything else but regulate the current going to the battery? In other words, can I put in a new 12volt alternator and just chuck the regulator? Thanking you, jmf.

Hi,
The way an alternator works is to make AC power from a magnetic field, which is fed DC from the regulator.
The AC is converted to DC by diodes in the alternator. By making AC rather than DC directly, the alternator can be smaller and lighter than a generator.
Your alternator has an external regulator, so there is no way to bypass it and run without it.
You can opt to replace that alternator with a modern one, which incorporates the regulator and cut-out functions internally. These are usually referred to as a one-wire alternator.
Or, you can opt to replace the regulator for the alternator you have.
Personally, I would put in a new one-wire alternator. You need use none of the current wiring and run a new wire from the new alternator to the battery. Just disconnect and tape off all the old alternator wiring.

With the availability of one wire alternators nowadays, I would agree. I can get Delco 10SI or the smaller Denso style alternators. I have used both to great success.
