Best choices and price I've found are at cyber weld:

I got a Hobart Black XVX 770627 for $225. It has twice the viewing area as my old helmet, and everything -- including response time --is completely adjustable. They also have a similar Miller for about $50 more. My original auto darkening helmet was less than $100 and lasted 8-10 years, but this one is much better and well worth the price for me.

The one I use came from Harbor Freight and I am satisfied with it. Not ever having used a different brand I don't know if it is good or bad but it works.

Forgot to mention that cyberweld has Hobart auto darkening helmets as cheap as $67. Depends on what features you want, but good range of prices.

The hat I was using was a harbor frt unit. It's around 8 yrs old. I think the battery has almost failed. It doesn't darken fast and I'm getting a little flash if the arc is visible when I light up. I can't open it to replace the battery but I might cut it open for a look to see if it's possible and then reglue it.
I'll look into the Hobart stuff. I would like a bigger window.
Thanks for the replies.

I got two 290 dollar auto darkening from Lincoln welders .these are top pf the line and I got four cheap welding helmets on special about 70 bucks each and the guys love the cheap stuff they don't need the battery's changed all the time the expensive units always have dead battery's as the cheap ones are solar powered heck we have a lot of cheap welding helmets at this point .Digitup.

WOW, night and day!!!
I was in bad need of a new hat and my wife was in Spokane. I had her stop by Harbor Frt and pick up a cheap one to get by. I was using an old "top of the line" harbor frt from when they first started making them and I couldn't justify the $300 plus big name hats were going for at that time.
This new one is so much better that I'm not sure I need anything else. I would like a bigger view, but man this thing is nice. And it was the cheap one too.
If you're using an old one like I was, it might pay to look into a newer one. The regular view is so much brighter than the old one.

Great news, Gus! Whether it is cheap or expensive solutions, eye protection is essential. My 87 year old father in law is suffering from a lifetime of poor eye and hearing protection, which is why I put a premium on both for me.
