1958 440I Wheel Tractor
1958 440I Wheel Tractor
I came across a 1958 440I wheel tractor with a #71 loader yesterday. I am a bit puzzled. It is currently painted green. On the wide front end and brake petals I can see yellow paint under the green. However, on the hood, dash and most of the remainder of the tractor there is no sign of yellow paint under the green. Lots of places where the green is flaking and just bare metal under. Also the aluminum John Deere hood emblems are yellow rather than the black that would be typical on an industrial tractor. I have read that John Deere never made an ag/green version of the 440. Has anyone ever seen a green 440? Thoughts?

Ag green was an option code for the 440's, can't remember the code number off the top of my head, but I think it is 64. I have had, and known of several green tractors and crawlers, but not a lot of them.
A serial number search through Two Cylinder might clear it up some.
BTW, there is an ag green 440 crawler not far from you right now at Grandview.

Lavoy,
Thanks for clearing up that there were in fact ag green 440's.
Looks like there were only about 2341 440I wheel tractors made, probably not a lot of ag green ones. If I decide to buy this tractor I will definitely do a SN research. I have heard that rather than going through Two Cylinder, a person can now go directly to the archives and do the research. Might be going up there next Friday for Mecum auction. May run over to archive, never been there.
I have not been to Randy's in a couple years, I don't think he had that one last time I was there. Unless my memory is getting that bad.

All serial number searches must be done through Two Cylinder unless this is a recent change that I don't know about. Last I knew, the archives are closed to pretty much everyone.
Crawler might have been at my place for repair when you were there.
