were reversers on tractors

Post by pop pop » Thu May 14, 2015 8:16 am

the real question being, when did reversers first appear?
my guess would be late model40's.
but then, were all the torque tubes the same after the introduction of the reversers? (they would all have to have "the hole".)

i dont recall seeing ag tractors with a reversers.
the only tractor i ever did see with a reverser was a 440I backhoe.
reversers were scarce even on the crawlers.
just wondering...
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime

Reversers were an option starting with 420's, most of the model variations, but not high crop. No grease hole til later 420, reverser in a 40 is a dealer or user installed item that was done after the 420's came out, there is a factory service bulletin detailing the process.
I've seen a lot of wheel tractors with reversers over the years, not really rare.

Hi,

The first reverser was a gear type on the early 420. That changed to the differential type late in 420 production. The 430 and 440 series were all differential style.

You can tell the gear type by the handle on the right side. The differential type is on the left side.

I have seen about as many reversers on 420/430 tractors as in the crawlers. Mostly on the Standard and Utility. The Tricycle and W-row crop utility variants usually have the live PTO clutch, which is counter to having a reverser. One had to choose between those two options when ordering the machine.

Where I rarely see a reverser is on the 320 and 330 models. I have only seen a couple of those equipped with reversers. It may be they were not a factory option and were added later.

320/330 would have been dealer or owner installed with the service bulletin.

I don't know who came out with the first reverser but they were an option and many owners remembered well the depression and were unwilling to spend the extra money on something that wasn't nessecary and that they didn't think would pay a return. Then Cat came out with thier power shift that eliminated the need of a reverser for the and the shuttle shift came out and was used on smaller loaders and TLBs. As of 20 or so years ago you started to see shuttles on farm tractors. Guys doing a lot of feeding of bunkered/bagged silage and round bales use em on thier tractors with loaders for feeding round bales.
