Broke down a bought a dozer

Post by oldtanker » Thu Sep 03, 2015 10:36 pm

I did try to find an affordable (to me) JD but had to settle for an early 50's Cat D4. Once I get it home I'll get a picture up so you all can laugh at me!

Is it going to be of more use to you than a Gen. Creighton?

Nothing wrong with a good ol' D4... growing up on the ranch we had a MC and a D4 7U series. Each had a job to do, and both served their purpose well.
I have the MC and my uncle has the D4 on the ranch. I may have some books on the D4 if you need some info, depending on the series you have.

Schennery: Lot more now  ! Don't need a tank....but it would be fun!

Coyboy: It will be delivered sometime later this next week. I'll get the serial number and figure out what year/series it is then. One another note later this month I'll be out in the Grangeville ID area later this month. Taking the MIL out to see her sister. How close are you?

Yea I looked it up on maps. I'm looking for things to do while I'm there. I don't think a 14 hour round trip is going to be one of them as much as I'd like to. OH well.

Nice!! That's what we had on the ranch.
Is the fuel tank behind the seat or beside you? Does the pony motor have electric start?
If you need any tech info, I'm pretty sure I have the service manuals and a parts manual, and I could pass on the info.

OK thanks. I don't have any of the manuals yet. And yes. It' an electric start pony on it. Interestingly enough it uses the same carburetor that JD used on the pony motor on the R.

Hi,

You typed the post title wrong. Let me fix that for you:

I Bought A Down Dozer And (am) Broke

At this point, I am afraid to use a smiley..... :P

And, this isn't a Deere vs Cat comment. It is, unfortunately, a Dozer Truth...

LOL I've been told that a few times! The pony carb and steering brakes need work. Undercarriage is about 70-75%!! Main engine runs. Could have do a lot worse for 2200. Wife is giving me heck cause it has a little rust.....

Cowboy, forgot, Side fender mounted tank, 1947.

That is interesting that it uses the same carb as a R. I've never been around an R, but it's pony was a 2 cyl......from a 70 on, Deere used 4 cyl for the pony.

Our D4 was a 51...fuel tank behind the seat.

Hi,

Well, that D4 surely sounds worth going broke on. Especially if that 75% is 'our' measurement and not a 'sellers' version (which means the tracks stay on for 3 out of 4 turns).... ;)

:o Stan yea I think I'm a little better off than that! But the condition of the tracks were then first thing I looked at. So for 2200 plus 180 to get it 100 miles home I'm happy with! The fact that the main engine runs good and it steers makes it even better. Round these here parts most guys think there is gold under that there dirt, paint and rust and price accordingly. 3K for a worn track, "ran when it was parked" is the norm. Haven't seen any of the old JD's with a blade or loader offered for less than about 3500 in a couple of years. Was at an auction 2 years ago, a JD 1010 crawler loader, really bad track, front idlers flopped back and forth sold for 4500. So I'm pretty happy.

Hi,

Sounds like a great deal to me. :)

I always like the 'ran fine when we parked it' line. I translate that to 'was running until this point right here'... :P
