An easy way to remember how to put clamps on is "Never saddle a running horse". The free end is the running horse, the u-bolt is the cinch.

That was one of the things I learned. I'm in the process of cabling my daughter's barn back together at the sills with cable (remember that snowcat winch cable I got last year?) and big turnbuckles. Now hopefully I'll clamp the thimbles correctly. Paul
