I ran a Cat tracked skidsteer quite a bit doing snow removal til I moved into the payloader. Gotta admit, cab, heat, joysticks, not a bad outfit to run. I could run where the wheeled ones couldn't both on ice and deep snow. On the whole, I was really impressed.

I think about doing a enclosed cab for the 420 when I'm pushing snow and soon after I'm starting to wear it. No matter how much I bundle myself up I always get cold after a while, then I start to think about a heater. A distant neighbor of mine snow blows with a large Kubota, enclosed cab with a front mounted 7 foot wide blower. It's just amazing to watch the snow flying a good 50 feet in the air! Last year i seen him mostly wearing a tee shirt and jeans, the other night was a tank top, flip flops, and a pair of jogging shorts. That's when I really start to think about making a heated cab!oldmetalmender wrote:Those enclosed cabs look mighty comfortable!!

I have seen that in one of those John Deere day movies that I have where they are logging pulp wood in Canada. They have canvas from the front of the tractor to the operator, looks warm for that timeframe.B Town wrote:We have used canvas engine curtains connected to a canvas tube to bring heat back to the operator, as long as the fan is not a pusher.

The city of Winnipeg, MB used John Deere crawlers for years to clear the sidewalks. They had a complete canvas cab with windows, I think it was Heat Houser brand, we have the remains of one. It even had a roll down rear door, and the sides went all the way to the grill so the hot air from the radiator came back on the operator.
They are no longer available for old crawlers, but a universal fit for a small tractor could be fairly easily modified to fit. You wouldn't have the top and back, but still much better. We ran one on a 4020 for many years, still do, and you can't believe how just a little wind break, and some engine heat changes things.

Lavoy, I searched and found that they still make the heat Houser for a 1010 crawler, I would think it would fit a 420-440????? Pretty interesting product!

Yes, my brother bought one, but never got it mounted. It is a universal application, so I am sure it would fit a 420, but would require modification.

No more snow here right now. But, rain, rain, then some rain and the next more rain. It's been dry for a couple of years and this isn't hurting anything except some things I'd like to do outside.
Side note on the wet. On a hillside in front of my house there is a lot of brush that I can't normally get to. I decided to cut a road through it with the small excavator. Right below the house (actually where the house is now) has always been a wet area with heavy brush. While digging, that was the only area any way near mud. On down from that it was perfect digging conditions and I could rip out the heavy brush along the road as I went. The odd thing was one spot below a huge pine tree it was bone dry ! The only dry spot I found.
Now that I know the digging is easy, I might put in a couple more trails. I want to get more brush removed and put in a big water tank for potential forest fire use. Previous years and last year fires weren't far away and made me very nervous.

Ugh, fires... Last August on the12th I called in a fire at 4AM on the mountain top 6 miles away as the crow flies. For 11 hours they worked it with 5 planes and 2 heli's. Single digit humidity and 95-100 degrees out. They knocked it back to nearly nothing. Then the wind kicked up the next morning. The next 5 weeks were so incredibly stressful as it grew to 26 thousand acres. It made it to 2.5 miles up the road. 15 miles to the north. It went 6 miles north in one night. It was the Tower fire up here in the Pan handle on the Washington side. I watched it come down the mountain to us. Then we lost sight of the front line. To smokey and the feds closed the road up with stiff penalties for crossing the barrier. It was really bad. So if you have fire prevention work to do, don't put it off. I have only lived here two years but this summer I am going to be busy preparing for it again. I already dug a pond and it's full. My neighbor and I bought an old tanker fire truck. With foam. It was awful. I sure met a ton of great neighbors though. We all helped each other in teams. Some good folks here.
As for covered cabs, My 400 backhoe sure could use one. The 450 is a pusher fan and I just dress up with lots of layers. I like the idea of making a soft top type of cab though. I have an industrial sewing machine and that could be fun. You can get everything online. Including good marine thick windows. I wish my to do list had less than 4000 things on it.

If you have a pusher fan, you can put a heat tube on the front of the grille that blows warm air back on you, and 450 heat housers or whatever you want to call them are readily available.
