Odd, it appears after noticing my engine was running hot that my thermostat is stuck. This is right after my work I completed. Wondering if I had an air bubble below the thermostat from a complete coolant exchange. I shut it off and sure enough, the cast elbow is really hot all the way to the thermostat. Above it the hose is cool as is the upper tank of the radiator.
The thermostat is about 4 years old. I have a JD thermostat and gasket on order and it's probably half way here by now. Weird it happened now.
It got up to 210. And normally runs at 180ish. Old yellow machines, I tell ya....

Be sure the replacement thermostat has a small hole (1/16" or so) in the mounting plate so air cannot get trapped under it before is opens.

I just received a thermostat from John Deere and got it in yesterday. Drove it today and it is great. Solid at 180. I tested the old 180 thermostat in a pan with a temp gun. It did not start to open till it hit 205 and was slow to open. It was fully open at 213 or a boil. Hmmm. I shut the motor down at 210 when I noticed it. It never runs that hot. And no the JD stat had no hole for air bubbles. I probably should have put one in it but I trusted it being Original JD it was probably fine.
I did however fill the engine and cast elbow all the way up to the thermostat housing before I installed it. Pretty odd that it would go bad after a coolant change back to ethylene based coolant. The old thermostat is about 4 years old. I greased the machine and told the dozer it was next and came in for dinner. Glad it was that simple and a quick fix.
