You are watching the news and there is a mudslide or something and the news anchor says something like, "And so they brought the bulldozers out in force" when you look behind them and there is nothing but bucket loaders scooping up the mess without a track in sight?

I have issues I know, but that just bugs me. I yell at the TV all the time "They are not bulldozers they are bucket loaders!"

Does this bother anyone else or is it just my pet peeve?

Nah. Doesn't bother me. Not when it comes to normal people, anyway. They are lucky that they get it that close.

Now, when it comes to equipment people calling it out incorrectly, that does bother me. As in calling a crawler loader a bulldozer....

It does bother me because there are people that will believe what the reporter said. If they can't get it right just say heavy equipment.
That's like calling an excavator a backhoe.

about the same here ....Although there are Rubber tired Dozers BUT they are NOT used for mud slides

This bothers me a little because journalism used to mean objective reporting through source and fact checking- nowadays journalism means telling a sensationalistic story regardless of the facts.

I always wanted to make a poster of silhouetted equipment and send it to my local TV news station so at least they could zero in on the equipment.

As a side note though, it is interesting to hear what other regions call equipment. Here a Bobcat is a skid steer, that name has changed slightly as Bobcat branched into excavators and stuff, but years ago, we all had Bobcat's, even if it was a green John Deere skid steer in the barn.

Another one I heard of is from the southern boys, they call an excavator a track-hoe. I don't have an issue with it, but just a regional name for something.

Here in Cali it is either a track-hoe or excavator ..... and there are rubber tired excavators also.. LOL

Now that my dozer-friend, is funny!

I was going to have my wife pose on my new-to-me crawler as she is very pretty, but with terminology like this floating about, now I am not so sure. (I am just joking obviously, it takes a lot to offend me).

I had a guy who wanted to give me a D8 with a cable blade for free. Running, too. But what to do with it? Even getting it hauled would be pretty costly. But, I passed on it because I could not think of a thing I would use it for.

I rented that one to clear a 12 acre field of stumps. If I had the chance you had, I would jump at it. I honestly need two bulldozers, a small one for logging and a big one to clear stumps.

An excavator works really well at ripping stumps out, but with a dozer you can rip the stump out AND push them to the edge of a field. Some say you push all the topsoil with it, but that is not the case at all. After I get the stump out I leave the blade up by a foot or two and the topsoil just falls off on its way to the edge of the field. The best thing to do is push them out of the ground and let the frost fracture the dirt. The next spring push just the root to the field edge. That works well if you are patient.

The true worth of a big dozer is its wide blade. With that you get a really level field, but hey I know you this is not anything new to you.
