Retired!

Post by CuttingEdge » Mon Jun 06, 2016 4:21 pm

In all the excitement of getting out in the woods with the ole 350D, I forgot to mention that as of Monday at 7AM I officially retired from the shipyard.

It was fun at times, always interesting and loved the guys and gals I worked with, but its hard to farm and build ships too. I guess if anything, it was nice to go out with a bang, and if any of you have seen the latest US Navy Destroyer, the USS Zumwalt on the news lately, I welded on parts of it. Yes day to day it got dull, but when those ships sailed down river with 300 sailors aboard, there was pride too. I guess it was fitting that I left the day after Memorial Day.

As many of you know, the wife and I have a few acres here in Maine and the plan is to clear it of wood like it was in 1900, and increase our flock of sheep. We have always held onto our wood, never cutting but a few cords from it, considering it our "savings account", but wood does not live forever and if we let loggers cut it, they end up with 2/3 of the money. Why not just retire and plug away on clearing land and increasing our flock of sheep as we go?
I have no intention of traveling to my grave in a well manicured body; instead I am going to slide into heaven with a big power turn, totally wore out with busted knuckles, jump off my dozer loudly yelling, Woo Hoo, another Shepard has just arrived!

Hi,

Hmmmm. I thought 'retired' meant finally putting new rubber things on that 60 year old tractor! :P

Congrats!

I have always counted 7 Dec. 2004 as the date I retarded. But in 1960-63 I spent 33 months on a DD or DDR {DDR743} that was liad down in Bath, Maine on 27 May 1944, launched 5 Oct. 1944 and commishioned 22 Dec. 1944. Back then they probably did not have as many welding inspectors as they do now.
Supposedly she was the first destroyer to drop anchor in Tokio Bay in 1945.
They used her as a missile target in the early 80s I heard.
