International U111 backhoe

Post by lurch85 » Sat Oct 01, 2016 7:13 pm

Went and looked at a few - 111 backhoe attachment from what I believe to be a 3400 International backhoe... The guy says it weighs 3000 to 3500 pounds, and it has been converted for a three-point lift... I would be running a John Deere 4020 to power this bad boy... I'm a little bit worried it's a bit too big... What do you guys think? I believe the lifting capacity of the three point hitch is supposed to be about 3700 pounds?

The issue is not lift capacity, it is the stress that will be transmitted to the top link, it will just never tolerate that kind of stress, not too mention the load shaft bushings down below. Top link was meant to stand the stress of a 3000lb or so implement digging in the ground that might stick back 6 or 8 feet. With a backhoe, you have a lever arm that could be 15 to 18 feet long and will still lift maybe a 1000 lbs at that distance.
If you look at a 50 Deere hoe that would have come on a 440, the upper braces are at least 1" X 2" solid bar stock each to withstand the stress. The also never hook to anything resembling the trans or associated like a top link does. On a wheel tractor, they go the the loader frame, on a crawler, they go to the loader or dozer frame directly.
I spent the first 30 years or so of my life on 4020's, and we still have both of them I grew up on. My opinion of a 3PT hoe on a 4020 would be 8-10 foot digging depth max, and weight of hoe would not be my concern.
