Little tractor that could(maybe)

Post by amos » Thu Feb 01, 2018 5:52 pm

Started on my new auction treasure. Yanmar 3000 tractor:32 HP with a 3 cyl diesel. Major leak at head gasket below exhaust manifold and fellow wrench turners know it is either blown head gasket or cracked head. Got lucky on this one and was a blown gasket. Since head is off it is being rebuilt by a local shop with good people and I'll replace rings and rod bearing inserts. All said and done should be $600.00 for a light inframe.
As always this one was owner abused and finding typical other stuff needing attention. Good tranny and other major systems and I'll probably be keeping this one.
A diesel is a diesel and these little tractors are soooooo easy to work on.

Update on the engine innards:
Piston 2 and 3 burned and not worth salvaging.
Liners good enough.
Head true and flat,same on block.(had a shop vat clean head,resurface valves and seats,guides good,springs good,new seals)
Connecting rod bearings:cap bearings looked new and measured new. Top bearings had worn just through babbit at center and measured .001 to .002 worn.
Crank bearing surfaces in spec.
New rings,2 new pistons,new rod bearings,new head gasket,assorted other new gaskets,refurbished head,new filters and fluids:about $700.00
Actual wrench time is around 14 hours; rest of time waiting on parts and head.
Shops here charge $2500.00+ for what I've done.
Later today will see if it purrs or goes ka-boom.
