My bitch for today

Post by townlineterry » Thu May 03, 2018 12:28 pm

Been trying to find a cheaper source for steel plate as I have a couple of fabrication projects in the works. So I find a website of a steel service company that is not to far away. They have a page to fill out for a quote request which I do. Three days later I get a email from the that is a survey asking if I want a quote. Did not filling out the quote request answer that question already? Still waiting for that quote.
It could be just me but I think their customer service department could use a do over.

If you are not concerned about minor variations in thickness, see if any steel supplier near you has "coil ends". The first so many feet that comes out of a de-coiler is marginally off spec, and usually can be bought much cheaper. I am talking 4 x 10 or 5 x 10 sheets though.

Mill ends are good but you can also get good deals at scrap yards. Of course some of their steel is good for melting down only but they usually have good material too.
Made several projects from "scrap" over the years that looked and functioned as though I used new steel.

And on customer service: those days are mostly long gone. I'm always having to walk people I'm dealing with on how to help me with my needs with very few exceptions and the exceptions are always older workers who know their job.
It use to bother me: now I just shake my head and deal with it.
