How crazy an idea is...

I'm thinking about pouring concrete ramps the width and spacing of my old 450c loader that will allow me to drive up on them and have the belly pan at level above my head. I would put footers and lots of steel in it. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being genius and 10 being beyond crazy what do you think?

I thought about making a pit but then I'm always going to be pumping water =(

Good morning,

I like the idea quite a bit. I think for safety reasons it would be a good idea to put a edge or short guardrail on the edges to prevent the steel cleats from sliding sideways on the concrete and falling. I'm certain you have thought of this, but just wanted to add it.

Not crazy, but higher than I would go. I would also put an angle iron with the angle up for a guide so the tracks can't slide off as easy. Think about being on top, and one clutch binds, you grab the wrong lever, etc., long way to the ground.
I have run them up on a rail road tie to get a little extra clearance, but nothing that high.

Yes. Side rails would be a good idea. BTW, I also use rail ties. And, a couple pieces of cardboard from old fridge box sides to slide on. Works pretty good.

Ya, I can see the angle guides on the outside. I've done the rail road ties too but I'm looking at replacing my bottom rollers and I've already snapped 2 bolts off ( gotten 6 loose) and I've got a long ways to go. I know I'll be spending a lot of time down there welding, heating, drilling,fishing out broken bolts. It sure would be nice not to do it laying on the ground.

Easiest way to do rollers is to remove the track frame. Spend your money on building a track pin press which really makes the job easy. We use ours 1-2 times a month as my dad is in the shop full time at 72 years old. I know he has used it twice in the past 2 weeks on a 450 loader hoe that got both steering clutches rebuilt and a 450E widepad that we put track chains only so it’s easy to do the tranny this winter. Will be doing a complete roller job on a cat 931 LGP in the next month. We get lots of use out of our machine shop built track pin press, built for 350 rails but have used it on a Cat D6C as well.

Other than that we run them up on 8” blocks to work underneath.

Pretty sure he was talking about a master pin press, not a track press. Master pins will come out with a hammer or big air hammer, so 10 tons or less and some heat will do it easily. Repinning and bushing a 450 will be 40 tons and up. Then you have to build the saddle and pin and bushing receivers as well.

Yes it’s a track pin press. Cylinder is about 10 inches in diameter with a 10 stroke. Has line up rings on both sides to accept heavy duty 1 inch rod with a backer plate that fits behind the link and attached with nuts front and rear. Will fit thru 350 and 450 links otherwise need to use it in the vertical position. It’s will push out non master pins as well. We use a hand pump most of the time but also have a one way electric pump which works well. We use a gauge to tell how much pressure is being applied however with the hand pump you can tell by feel. If it pressures up you hit the track link from the top which will usually allow the pin to move. We start without a driver pin as the cylinder rod is necked the first inch down to just fit inside a 450 link and then we back the cylinder off and adjusting nuts so we can insert a driver pin. We ground down some 350 and 450 pins until they are a loose fit.

It did not cost much to build as we had all the materials on hand. I would highly recommend building one if you work on crawlers frequently as we do.
