Just a little taste

Post by 77 Ford » Mon Feb 15, 2021 2:33 pm

So i'm in SW Missouri and we're getting a little taste of what you get up North. It's been negative temps all weekend , windchills in the -25-30 it's brutal. Our buildings are made for this, our houses are not made for this and certainly people were not prepared. The local propane delivery service has all of it's trucks down with gel'd fuel. They didn't think to add any additives before it hit - 10? Good grief. Now the power companies are doing rolling blackouts to "save the grid from total failure"....what a mess.

You folks up North (looking at your Canada) need to close the door and keep that cold up there !

I feel lucky (saying that should change things). We've only had a few mornings below 0F so far this year and the days have gotten up into the low teens at least. Wind chills have been a bit rough at times. Right now its +28 and spitting snow at times. Snow, sleet, possible rain and Icing expected through tomorrow. Right now we are on the 4-8" snow side of their prediction for sleet and freezing rain. In this time of year can be bad. We went 7 days without power after the ice storm in 1998. Most people get by up here as we often have storms where power is lost, so generators and supplemental heat like wood is common.

I feel for those in the southern areas with the weather presently hitting places that just don't get cold weather. And don't have backup heat sources. Rolling black outs are not good. Hopefully the weather pattern shifts soon.

Western Iowa/Eastern Nebraska is going to smash a 1890’s record low of -17 (air temp). Forecast to be -22 Fahrenheit (air temp) this early Tuesday AM.

All is well so far. Talk of rounding black/brown-outs, but have not seen any, personally.

Cooper and brother Duke (think German Shepard body’s with Black Lab hair/color) are well cared for. Barn cats are buried in the hay/loft. No calves, cattle have a dry place to lay, protected from the wind, with open freshwater and hay/protein licks. I done all the Dad talk me.

Best regards, Bruce

Texans are trying to keep their swimming pools unfrozen. It's a catastrophe!

-22 F is mighty cold by northeast standards, let alone Iowa. Keep the sinks in remote parts of the house trickling water.

well so far our area seems to be doing ok...we are balmy 22 degrees right now, however did get some ugly overnight...packed snow underneath with loose dry and now crusty frozen over top of about 6 inches and all of our driveways plowed shut courtesy of the street plows.
So will be making trip out to road to try to help clear neighbors entrys at least and elders drives....should i be able to start the old 6 volt jd40s wheeled to do the job!!
Have NOT seen below Zero as yet, but am sure we will!!

Cant do any snow birding as they having a bit of troubles!

Well Abilene, Texas hit -4 F this morning and the weather guesser said that tied for seventh coldest on record as long as records have been kept. They claimed the rolling blackouts were working but my power was off for over 9 hours during the night.

We were 30 below within the last week, going to be 30 above by the weekend, 60 degrees is quite a swing in a week or so.
