Flywheel ring gear chewed up.

Post by 2010OWNER » Sun May 13, 2007 9:44 pm

Gentlemen,
Due to a malfunctioning starter on my JD 410 backhoe, the teeth on the ring gear are about one third to one half gone on the starter side.

I have a new starter coming and plan to ignore the situation if it works.

I'd like to hear the comments of anyone who has encountered this before.

I don't want to be "stuck" somewhere with a backhoe that won't start. But I don't want to break the hoe in half to get at the flywheel either.

Thanks,
Brian

Ring Gear

We used to remove the ring gear - turn it over and re-install - At least the gear would mesh better with the new starter gear - A little heat on the ring gear is required for easy assy.

Chewed up ring gear

Thanks for the replies. I"d have never thought of just flipping the ring gear.

It's been a year now and not a hint of a problem...So for the time being, I'm going to let sleeping dogs lie.

If you are going to go to the work of splitting the tractor, I would install a new one.
