EAA Oshkosh Fly-in

Post by wwattson » Mon Aug 13, 2007 6:35 pm

If you love crawlers, you must love airplanes. The two naturally go together. Where do you think runways come from? If they ever invent the flying crawler, I'm so there.

Here's my main reason for going to the fly-in. And who knew these guys were so big into airplanes?

Image

My favorite is actually the Miller welding tent. I normally head over there to drool over a Syncrowave 200 TIG welder and make a few passes on some aluminum scraps with one of the instructors. If I ever get a spare $2000 laying around, it will be mine.

Here's the F-22 out for a public showing. The cockpit is still classified so they had everyone behind a rope with security keeping people back.

Image

This is the climb out after take off.

Image

And a high speed pass.

Image

They called this one the Generations flight. For the non-airplane types, the other planes are the Korean War F-86 jet and the twin engine WW2 P-38 Lightning.

Image

The B1B bomber. Two of these came up from Nebraska for a quick fly by.

Image

The B2. What a plane.

Image

The C17 cargo plane. This thing can almost fly stationary over a point.

Image

The plane in the lead is a B-24 followed by a B-17 and three B-25s.

Image

This Amphib looks like a lot of fun. Open cockpit and twin engine.

Image

For those of us that think we're pretty good at restorations, these guys will send you packing.

Image

And finally, the next step in the evolution toward flying crawler; the flying SUV. It's really a wing strength demonstration. This wing will support three of these SUVs but one makes the point.

Image

Hope you liked the break from crawlers.

You got some great pictures there, especially the F-22 in the climb!

It looked like they had good representation of different aircraft there. We have a pretty good airshow over here at Whiteman AFB (home of the B-2) and they did a generation flight with an A-10 with a P-38.

Looks like you had a good time!

Well I get to see C-130s and Bones nearly every day (Dyess AFB). But I would still like to make Oshkosh at least once. Nice photos. Never too busy to look at airplanes, old cars or old tractors.

Hi,

Well, a buddy has a Clark-Air dozer. That's about as close to a flying crawler as I can come! :P

BTW, it's pretty much the same thing as the old Terratrac GT-25 I had.

Hi,

For my job I travel alot all over North America and try to visit any air museums that I possibly can depending on available time. The best by far that I have been to is Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio (most planes are inside ). One of the most interesting planes on display is the only remaining Valkerie XB-70 (the B-52 can almost fit underneath it) experimental bomber as the other one that was built crashed in testing. I have not been to the one in Washington DC yet but I have heard since that was redone it also vhas a very impressive display of aircraft.

Lining the drive going into Dyess AFB (Abilene, Texas) they have a pretty nice outdoor museum. Including one of the earliest production Bones, B-52, B-47, Canberra ( not sure what the number was), C-130A, C-47, Cariboo, Provider, and about 15 more if you are out this way.

Nice Shots

I have an interest in flying and dozing. Dozing off in the livingroom chair too, but I won't go there.

Don, from PA. Next time you want to go to Wright Pat, let me know. I live not too far, my two kids go to Wright State (in the shadow) and you can inspect my 2010 too.

My brother used to be the mechanic for the F-100. He says it makes him feel old to go to the museum to see his plane. I used to live near a SAC base and the B-52's were stationed there. Anytime a storm was a brewin, they took to the air. They were safer above the clouds than on the ground. They were the only plane in active service that was older than their pilots. They also had so much electronics on board, they could not take off with full fuel tanks. They were followed by a tanker to refuel in air. The tip of the wings lifted 14 feet to take off. Talk about metal fatigue.

I seen B1's come in several times. Anyone see B1's and B52's do touch-n-goes all the time?

The best thing I seen was a crop duster working a field crosswise under the B52's doing touch-n-goes. That looked like a cat and mouse scene.

Mark,

Yes, next time in the Dayton area I will look you up. but I do not have any ideal on how soon it will be. Send me a pm with your contact info.

My youngest son graduated from the USAF Academy in May and had a pilot slot but ended up with a medical problem that will keep him from flying. Now he is at Vandenberg AFB in CA for "Space Missiles & Rockets".

Bill,

You showed a picture of the JD tent at the fly in. USAirways in Charlotte NC just started using some John Deere 3320 compact tractors to pull their luggage carts around. It caught my attention because I have the older version 4310 E-Hydro 4WD with front end loader, backhoe, 60" mower deck and box blade.
