You are seeing a lot of M14 in the pics you see from over wherever now. I can not remember the designation, but they are being used as intermediate range sniper rifles. Talked to a young snniper a year or so ago, and they had the heavy barreled M4 variant for up to 600 meters, the M14 for 1000 or so, then the Barret for the long range stuff.

I took my old assault rifle to a cast bullet, military rifle match last weekend. Don't ask.  I need to do some load and operator work it would seem. Best I could do with iron sights was about a 6" group at 200 yds.

Couldn't get the selector switch off of single shot so my rate of fire was about 10 shots in 12 min. The problem was mainly my choice of powder. I used black powder. Had to use a blow tube between shots to keep the fowling soft.

Yep, them 1888 trapdoor assault rifles the military used were a little slow

Yeah, but when you get good at it, you might be able to bump that up to 12 shots as long as barrel heating is not a problem!

I have a Springfield Armory M1A, like it, but it's not a favorite. What I paid 15 years ago and what it's going for now, I should have bought 5 instead of stocks... My favorite 308 is my Remington PSS, of a FAL, for long range shooting I go with my AI 338 Lapua.

Back in the mid 80's I bought an M-1 from the DCM and they sent me a nice one manufactured by International Harvester. I paid somewhere around $165 for it. I shot it in NRA Highpower rifle shoots for a few years and than switched jobs and did not shoot it for 10 years. When I went to get back into shooting I found the value went way up >1k. I wanted to get my cost down so I traded it for a new Bushmaster DCM AR-15 and some cash back. I wish I still had that M-1!!! Last year a co-worker was selling an Springfield Armory Standard M1A (new in box). I bought that and only put a dozen rounds through it until a few weeks ago. Towards the end of shooting it that day it started to double up on me (2 shots one pull of the trigger). I pulled the trigger group and sent it back to Springfield for repair. I will see how it is when they send it back to me.

The early China M1A's had some problems but they did get that fixed....I got a good shooting one. I'd give it up for a nice MC...LOL

Update on M14. ATF cashed my transfer tax check in April. My dealer checked with ATF recently, and my application is still at the fingerprint check stage. And some people want the government to run health care!!!!!!!!! Would think my background check would be easy, with 26 years in the Marine Corps! Just venting! Pat

Not meaning to add to your pain Pat, my M1 Garand arrived from CMP this week. Its a beauty and shoots great. I might get it reparkerized and refinish the wood but it's functionally in great shape. I'll try to post a few picture this week.

No, I got Lavoy a box of 30-06 bullets and I was going to let him shoot my new rifle.

Merry Christmas Lavoy.

After nearly 6 months of waiting, My M14 paperwork came through and I picked it up from the class 3 dealer. Shoots really well and grouped tight on single fire. Tried a few 3 shot bursts and found I couldn't hold it as well as I once could!! She walked off the paper. But I don't care because it is really fun to shoot. Glad I stocked up on 7.62 some time back. Now if I only had a BAR. (Guns are like crawlers. Always looking for more!) Pat

Went to "Public Enemies" last night, several Thompson's and BAR's in there, needless to say I was drooling.

M1

Post by 2010OWNER » Wed Oct 28, 2009 6:23 pm

I haven't been following this post, but I saw an ad in the Aberdeen "Daily World" selling an M1. He was selling some extra clips and other stuff with it. 308 caliber if I remember correctly. He was asking around $1600 for it.
If you can't find the "Daily World" ads online, let me know and I'll dig the paper out of the recycle bin.

Lavoy,
Don't know if you're still looking, but there's a "like new" (and looks it) M1A on a shotgun site. From the Springfield custom shop with all the goodies and extra mags for just over $2000.00 but it's been there a little while so the owner might be willing to deal. Very nice looking rifle with very nice wood too.

I would love to, but bought a couple new .22's. The kids already have a couple thousand round through them, so I guess kind of foolish to buy something that would only see a few rounds a year.
