scrap steel

Post by Eric.MacLeod » Mon Apr 28, 2008 2:50 pm

im not sure if steel is going out of sight where you live but here in maine people are scraping anything made of metal, this includes many bulldozers,i seen 4 dozers in one yard to be cut up! one was a cat d7 that was running and offloaded driven to scrap pile and shut down. my friend got 800$ for his 440 jd crawler that ran but needed steering work on one side,im not sure but if you buy and sell used parts it might pay to get chummy with your local scrap yard before alot of this old iron is gone forever..Eric

That just makes me sad, I couldn't bring myself to scrap something that runs and needs such little work. Plus you would think that somebody could sell it outright for more than the scrapper could give them. Breaks my heart

my cousin runs a junk yard. 2 months ago scrap cars were going for $230/ton, last week they were $300/ton, and scrap hauled to the scrap yard was $320/ton. He said that it took a 50% hit and was down to $150/ton this week. There were some big scrap orders to be filled this month, and then the price was going to correct, for now. Same thing around here though, lots of people cleaning things up for a few $$

Been to the yard with a load of scrap, but not necessarily anything usable. It's idiotic how wasteful people are these days. It boils down to laziness, people want a quick buck NOW instead of realizing the true value of an object.

My brother was helping me pick up scrap and was bugging me to throw out stuff made of good pieces of 1/4" plate, I'm like, no dummy, if we have to buy that stuff new for some project it's going to cost a hell of a lot more than what anyone is going to pay us for what we already got...

things are out of hand here in mn too.
don't fool yourself, the the car companys and machinery companys love it. they've been wanting this old stuff gone for a long time now. they want you too buy new, as the the old stuff was built to last too long and to easy to work on.
i like to tinker and rebuild the old horse drawn euipment but it's almost all gone now. you take a new holland haybine set in the brush for 60+ years and try to use after a weeks worth of work and a couple hundred in parts. only thing left will be some rotted rubber, some rust flakes, and whatever plastic that was used to hold it together.
seems there's a new era coming fast. i don't dare tell my children what i think the world will be like that's getting passed down to them.
i'll give them nightmares.

maybe i should write my thoughts as someone else.
i'll be good lavoy don't kick me off to the komatsu site :(
WISH IT WOULD STAY RUNNING!!!!
