Caterpillar D2 repair

Post by fixedforever » Fri Apr 09, 2010 9:45 pm

Ok, I just got the Cat D2 for $300. I am trying to get it working. Does anyone know any place where I can get parts for this machine? I need a distributor cap for the pony engine.
Here are some pictures of it, I should have taken pictures of winching it on the trailer to get it home, it was interesting.

Have you tried www.amoc.org or www.antiquecaterpillar.org or crawler heaven? The first two are caterpillar websites.

Ok, it seems the engine is seized. I tried putting it in 5th gear and towing it with my 1010, the engine turns about an inch then stops. I am going to try and remove the injectors and pour penetrating fluid in the cylinders, let it sit, and then try towing it again. Is this the best way to free up this engine?

And Lavoy, I need one of the spring contacts in the distributor cap that rides on the rotor. Its a very tiny piece.

make a concoction of penetrant, oil, pantherpiss, gas, what ever you got,
and pour it right down the stack , at least 2 quarts,
it will go the same way the rain went.
then turn that crankshaft back and forth till you get about half a round,
pull injectors, see which runs out with the most crude,
"lather, rinse, repeat"......
one thing to keep in mind, SERIOUSLY, you will have an explosive mixture under compression if you crank it too far
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime

I always took the starter out, using a crowbar on the flywheel teeth one can slowly work the engine over.

I am with Ken, using your other dozer to turn it over is asking for truoble. Unless you wanted to do it rough and dirty.
