I payed 3500 for my 440 gas last year and put about 2 grand into it including steering clutches.now I have a nice little dozer. That 3 point hitch complete with top link is worth around 2 grand. The condition of the undercarriage should be your big deciding factor.
Just my opinion Ron.

Get someone (if you do not) that truly knows these undercarriages and how to measure the wear points correctly. That can be your single biggest after the purchase nightmare. Make sure it is not one of the seller's buddies.
Hint, deep grousers or weded on bars are not the sign of a good U/C.
Basically the rest of it is tractor stuff. Most parts are pretty easy to find, especially replacement parts such as oil filters, spark plugs, points, etc.
Look for any places that have been welded or modified. These kill the value as far as a classic tractor, no matter how much paint is used.
Buy it before he finds out how rare the original 3 point hitches are.
Good luck.

Hi,
There's a question: How rare were 3-pt hitches on a 440?
I've never seen one on a 440, although I've seen a lot of 440's.
I've only seen 3-pt's on 420's and 430's and 1010's - that is the green paint units for ag use.
I've seen a couple on yellow 420's, but given that the 440 is specific for industrial while the 430 was specific for ag, how many 3-pt's have been spotted on a 440??
I have seen one or two on 350's, but by then there were no ag variants (green), so that makes some sense. I always wanted to get another 350 with a 3-pt and then paint it green! But, that's another topic for another post one day!
I understand that someone might have added a 3-pt onto the 440 at some point. That'd be easy enough. I just wonder how many 440s have been spotted sporting a 3-pt...
And, just so you know, that 3-pt could be worth upwards of $3k just by itself if it's all there and not wrecked....
Later!
Stan

It is known that a 3 point hitch was a factory option. It was also a field option.
I have never found any documentaion as to how many were on 440 C's. I don't think Dubuque captured that info. Besides, it would not be accurate with as with any field added options.
Suffice it to say, there are not very many of them left out there in complete and good condition.

Good to know that Dubuque did indeed cature that option information. It would still be anyone's guess as to how many 440 C's actually got one since it could be ordered by the dealer and sold or ordered by the customer and either installed by the dealer or the customer.

While they did record the option, they did not tabulate the number that were factory installed on any of the crawlers, nor would field installations be recorded either.
A 3PT on a 440 would not be at all uncommon. If you look at any of the manuals for the #64 6 way blade on a 440, it shows the crawler with a 3PT and a #24 scarifier. I have actually had, seen, and known of many 440's with a 3PT.

I have been hooked on 2 cylinder John Deere crawlers for about 4 years now and have done alot of research on line and have only came across 2 pitctures of 3 point hitches on them.My owners Manuel for my 440 has good pics of the hitch in it.
I would love to have one but cant justify what they are going for.

I have a 3pt on my 440IC.
The story I was told when I bought it was that it was part of "fleet" purchase by the stat forestry dept. in PA.
They all came with a 3pt and some type of a V plow to open fire breaks for fighting brush fires.
