I was at the the Portland Ind Gas Engine Show yesterday to see all the iron on display and for sale. I ended up buying two 12" rims and tires for the old Gibson tractor I have and two 19" Model A rims for the old Model A wagon. I got Model A tires from my brother in Texas last year, but my rims were 21". Since I did not have a tire stretcher, I had to find rims to fit. I am good to go now with a set of four, ready to scrape and paint.
Of the 100's of tractors on display, I only found one MC. There were several Caterpillar.
This is an old Holt dozer of unknown age.
This is an old Caterpillar dozer, also of unknwon age and the other side of the Holt. What a chunk of iron. They did look like they moved there under their own power.

When I was a member of the club Western Antique Power Association, there was a fellow at one of the meetings that was teaching us the history of Holt.
Seems that Holt was dead set at the idea all tractors must have steering tiller wheels. One day there was supposed to be a group of bigwigs that were supposed to come and tour the factory but there was a crawler that did not have the wheel fitted yet. The tractor must be moved for the tour. So some young mechanic says "no problem". Gets the motor running and jumps into the operating area and proceeds to steer the tractor using the brakes only.
So died the steering tiller wheel.

Hi,
I had a Terratrac that used brake-only differential steering and I can say that steering that was an Amusement Park ride. All the power going to the one track meant it sped up. A lot! So, it always tried to whip me off the seat!
I think I'll stick with no differential and de-clutching the one track before applying the brake method!
Later!
