Okay I have decided on how to build my shop. I am going to remodel the front part of the existing shop into a machine room for my lathe, mills, and the surface grinder. This room will be 12' X 20', to the north of the shop I am going to build on a 10' X 12' addition that will house my heating system (boiler, fuel tank, heat exchangers, pumps and controls), the air compressor, dust collector and power tool storage. The addition will require the machine area ceiling framing/attic floor to be rebuilt also, so I can build the new roof over the two areas. I plan on making the attic area into loft space. That space will be accessible from the following area.
Once the front of the shop is complete I will add a 30' X 38' addition on the back(east) side of the shop, that addition will give me a total of 1500 square feet of space.
Since I decided to save the front of the existing shop, I have to do a few repairs to it. The first repair is a new man door, to enter the shop. To put in a new door I had to repair the foundation that was cracked under the existing door. Since I had to dig down to the bottom of the existing footer I am installing drain tiles also. The footer will be back filled with run of bank gravel.
Photos of work so far.

To start this project I had to remove a shrub that was outside the front door of the shop. I dug it out and moved it out of the way.

I had to wait several days for the weather to warm up enough to mix the concrete and pour it. That happened yesterday, Sunday. It took seven bags of 5000psi "High-Early" Sakrete to fill the forms. After I finished the top I covered the concrete with insulation for the night. I checked it today and it did not freeze overnight.

Today I stripped the old framing from the old door back to the corner of the west wall.

Tomorrow I will add the plywood sheeting on the new framing, then I can start on assembly of the new door jam.

I wired the light for over the door in temporarily, this is the light that used to signal if the old door was locked. I need to built the system to activate the switch when I lock the deadbolt yet. It will not be too much work but I need too have it done before too long.

Since posting here I have had a load of Run of Bank gravel delivered (24.65 tons), dug the ditch to connect the shops foundation tile to the tile under the sidewalk, installed the tile and filter cloth, and backfilled the ditches with the gravel.

Before I started on the ditch, I stripped the gravel and stone that had been placed in the area between the shop and the sidewalk and reused it to cover the path around to the rear of the shop.

I had some gravel leftover, maybe 2-3 tons, I spread some of it out over the parking area and the driveway to help solidify the mud from installing the underground service to the house last summer. The rest I moved out of the way to a place I can get to it when I finish digging the final leg of the foundation tile.
Today I am going to get the shop straightened up from the thrash that this project was. It is just amazing how much stuff gets drug out when you are doing a project like this.

Willyr, that is my 1953 International Farmall Super-H with a Parsons Backhoe attachment on it. The tractor was my maternal grandfathers last tractor. It has been in the family since it was bought new from a dealer in Cambridge Springs, Pa. in 1954.
I am doing all this work so I can move my machine tools into the front area of the shop and have room to rebuild the crawler.

JT, I think the millings and turnings would be a little hard on carpet.
The door was a damaged return that a friend had bought from a big box store with a half dozen or so other returned/excess ordered doors, mostly special order that were undamaged. He had used a couple of them on his own house and had sold the others. He could not sell this one as it was just blank un-hung door. I picked it up to replace the one door on my house but I never got around to hanging it. Then the door had to be replaced as it was damaged in an attempt by someone to break in I went and bought a pre-hung and put it in.
Even with buying the jamb, hinges, threshold and the trim boards I saved around $100 dollars doing it this way. When I add the addition on the north side of this part of the shop, I will buy a new 9-lite pre-hung door for the main entrance door and solid pre-hung door for the Mechanical/Storage room All three doors will be Keyed Alike With Max security dead bolts in them.
The Machine Room and the Mechanical/Storage Room, will have a set of Double doors in them leading out into the new work bays. These will have dead bolts and drop bars in them to secure the door when I will be gone for a couple of days.
The double doors came out of a high school worked in years ago, I am going to have to build the jambs for them from 5" channel iron

Yesterday was warm and dry enough to paint the north side of the shop. The paint is Behr Oil/Latex Barn paint. I looked for regular oil paint but no one had any in stock this late in the season. It can be painted over either oil paint or latex paint, and since I had an area of oil paint on this side of the shop I decided to try it.

Today I will remove the painters tape from the light base, junction box and the conduit and this side of the shop will be finished until spring.
