I know the guy that owned that 440 that is in Owen Sound and it isn't far from me even at this point I could look into it .The guy that had it he is a friend and had three 440s and he still has two of them .There are a pile of them here I got a 440B several years ago but it is just too handy to let go of I could look into this if you like .Digitup.

My dad bought this 440 skidder from Pardee Equipment (Edmonton Deere Dealer at that time) with a bad engine in the early 70's. It had just come back from rental and had the normal leaking cylinders sleeves issue. He had stopped by to see if they had any used Timberjack or Tree Farmers and was headed over to Conoco to by a new 230 Timberjack if he couldn't find a used skidder.

He worked it loging (along with a 540 bought in 78 ) until the mid 80 and never ever considered using another brand. The deeres are easy to run and very dependable if run properly. The trick was to pull small loads and lots of them.

After that it got new tires (from a parts machine) and paint job. He now uses it to pull a disc in the garden and its a shame we don't have room in a shed for it.

In the late 80's and early 90's we bought, sold and fixed many of these 440's. Items to watch for include stripped wheel hubs, front driveshafts and the syncro-pacs in the transmission. We've never had one with the powershift, but the old manual shifting tramission works very well. The original ones came with a single shift lever like a farm tractor and then upgraded to two levers. We convered all that we got with the single lever to the twin lever design.

Since the demand for old logging equipment is so low, we now focus on rebuilding deere crawlers.

Want to thank everyone for the tips, will begin checking Craig's list in my area for a skidder, also thanks for the heads up on what to be watching for in terms repairs. Long skids with 440 crawler take a while.
