Ever hear of 3d printing? So far it is mainly in plastic or chocolate. There is an ability to get it in metal as the video link shows, yet it is complicated and pricey.

I think the Science Channel's How Do They Do It did a segment on this process. Guess if you can think it it will build it kind of a thing, would be an interesting toy to play with. As with all new technologies it come with a high price tag. The implantation of such a tool for building obsolete parts for old equipment would be to say the least great.

I have a co-worker (CAD operator) who used a 3D printer to make a perfect replica of the batmobile out of plastic.

High cost? You can get a build it yourself off of Ebay for $400. There are 6" cubed printers for $700 available now.
on Ebay search "reprap"
The common feeling is that with the open source of the printer is. Soon the printers will be selling for around $200.
