Service bulletins

Post by Lavoy » Sun Dec 23, 2012 11:56 am

Okay, not really off topic, but will post it here.
I spent a good part of the morning digging through some of my factory service bulletins. I guess I had forgotten just how much info I had, and I am not done digging, only got through one binder.
Sitting and re-reading these bulletins that I had not looked at in years, I realize that there is a terrible amount of info as far as updates, changes, and problems that we don't necessarily see in service manuals. I have a stack of mostly crawler only bulletins almost an inch high sitting on my desk, and have at least two more binders to go through. As I was digging through, I was thinking it would be nice to post them on here, but then as I kept going, I realize it would be a lot of posts. Add to it that one of my customers has at least as extensive a collection as I do, and it gets overwhelming.
Computers not being my strong point, I am seeking alternatives!?!?!?!? I doubt a print shop will put them in a binder for me with the Deere name all over it even though I have no intentions of selling the info, and it is all out of print material. I suppose it could be scanned and put on a CD, but then only available if I sent someone the CD, and I am not the guy to do scanning like that, we will all be old and grey before I would ever get it done.
I thought about another section on here only for service bulletins, but will have to talk to Jeremy about doing that, or if it is possible, and then they still need to be scanned in and posted.
Any bright ideas out there from the more computer literate?

Scan them into openoffice (if win7) or Word and save as a pdf file. Unless you can afford Adobe write software.

Wow, that info will be grate for us. My 420 has that bushing in the oil fill on the trans and though it was a farmers field fix cause some one lost the plug I was going to replace it with a 3/4 plug I would never known it was suppose to be that way?
It would be grate if they could be posted on hear but I would be willing to buy copies of them.

It should be pretty simple (aside from the shear volume you have) to scan and save them directly as pdfs. To transfer large files or groups of files you could use a free ftp hosting service like Dropbox (www.dropbox.com). It sounds complicated but it's actually pretty simple. You register and then upload whatever files you'd like to share to their server by following directions. Then you can either keep the location private and share specific files with specific people, or you can make a folder available for public viewing and download.

I use Dropbox a fair bit for sharing large files with clients, it works great and is easy to use although I bet there are others sites out there as well that do the same thing.

I saw a post somewhere that said all the old manuals, ect. were Public Domain now and any reprints were legal.
I don't think Mother Deere even cares about the old 2 cyls anymore.
Thier big money now is in those million dollar machines.

I know you see that a lot, but I think that it would never stand up if Deere decided to push the issue. If it has a Deere logo on it, you can't do it unless you pay Deere for the priviledge.
That being said, I don't want to sell them, I just want to get them in or on something that we can all reference easily.

not a lawyer nor do i want to be in that group. but i would think if you dont sell them you would be ok but if you sold them deere would legally get a cut?? so posting from free viewing would be ok? just my uneducated thoughts.

I don't know if this helps but Todd's tractor pages has service bulletin's for the model 40? I did notice that their isn't any deer logo on them. The sight lets you print them off to.

Yeah, I did not mean putting them up for sale. But I don't see anything wrong
with sharing them with friends.
That would be some great info that some of us may never see.
Hope you can come up with a way.
I am not much help, since I am not a computer guy, just barely get
around on one.

I got one of those NEAT scanners, I might see how that works. Then the next process would be loading them on here.

Lavoy: See if your site can upload files. If it can, files created by anyone could be shared like seen on the John Deere parts manual site. You could require that the files be posted in some standard format like .pdf, or MSWord, and then others could share some of their manuals too. This would save you time if someone already has a particular manual scanned in and saved in an acceptable format.
Just a thought.

Thanks for considering offering this resource. Paul

Not sure on that one, Jeremy would have to answer that one. I know he disabled the picture hosting funtion as someone used that as a backdoor to hack the site and crash it.

Not certain of this, yet Google at one time was willing to scan media and post it.
