John deere 690b value and part availability?
A friend of mine is looking to sell his Deere 690b and I am considering it. I don't need a machine this large..but I am guessing he will give me a good price.
I am going to be digging a 30x42 foundation and moving quite a bit of material around my yard as well as digging out many 24" pine stumps. I figure I can use the machine all summer and then sell it.
What are these machine worth. His machine is in good shape, starts, runs digs as it should. Doesn't smoke, the curl cylinder has a leak and I guess one of the track drives leaks. Needs a rewire, none of the gauges work and the switch for hi/low speed doesn't work....its stuck in slow speed. He says the under carriage is "good" but I will have to look at it.
He would be willing to have it transported to my place as part of the selling price. I think the selling price will be about $8500 delivered.
I think most parts are available other than the track drive motors.

LOL I think the 8500 covers the delivery price. It may be closer to thirty grand.
Hopefully he wasnt the yokel that hit the bridge in Iowa that transported their backhoe in the position you posted.

My wife drives the route where the driver hit the bridge with the backhoe. She said the trackhoe spun off the flatbed in a circular motion and landed upright on it's tracks.
Know some of the law enforcment, however, haven't heard yet where and/or how far pieces of the chains and binders flew. They're all still up there directing (dodging) traffic with flashlights in hand.
Appears the state will be taking down the damaged half that was opened like a zipper.
What a way to test a person's insurance

Hi Victor-
I don't know exaclty how much these go for used retail, but can tell you that in the last two years of Ritchie Brother auctions they sold (6) 690Bs and the auction price ranged from $5500 to $11,000 with the average around $7400.
Obviously cost outside of auctions is going to be a little higher so the price you were offered appears to be in the ballpark. The benefit you have is that you know the owner and hopefully the issues- condition of machines at auction can really be a shot in the dark and you can inherit someone else's headache.

I know listing price doesn't mean much, but on machinery trader and craigslist I cannot find a running digging 690b for less than $10,000. Actually most are listed upwards of $15,000.
I am trying to buy this machine and use it for 6 months or so and sell. So I need to buy it below value so I don't loose my shirt.

You will have to ask him.
I suppose it is mostly location. Up here backhoes have been commanding a higher price.
Ask them if you are on the "same page". Tell them you dont want to insult them. Who knows maybe he is thinking the same price.

That is a good price if the seller can agree to it than go for it make sure the finals have lots of oil in them and check to see if the manuals are with it these will show you what angle to leave the drive housing for filling proper Now when you say curl cylinder do you mean the dipper cylinder or the bucket cylinder both are easily rebuild able .I got one of the last of those 690B's new with pilot controls they were better than the 690C any day it was a disaster so that machine is well worth that money.Digitup.

I meant the bucket cylinder. And he does have the manuals for the machine. I am going to look at the machine next weekend and check out the finals and under carriage and give he a good hard test run.digitup2 wrote:That is a good price if the seller can agree to it than go for it make sure the finals have lots of oil in them and check to see if the manuals are with it these will show you what angle to leave the drive housing for filling proper Now when you say curl cylinder do you mean the dipper cylinder or the bucket cylinder both are easily rebuild able .I got one of the last of those 690B's new with pilot controls they were better than the 690C any day it was a disaster so that machine is well worth that money.Digitup.

if it is leaking oil it is gear oil in the planetary pot and hydraulic on the backside is drives some of the Hitachi planetary regularly weeped gear oil the 690B was built before Hitachi so it should be either Rexroth or Loman drives [Others on this forum would know]These three drives are are all back sided by a big ass o ring that tends to take a beating in life and will often leak gear oil as well . It is no big deal if your drive is leaking just that you don't run it dry of gear oil they were a great machine for there time .A lot nicer machine than the 690 A's And better as well as safer than the690C's were. Those are very tough old excavators. The price sounds great, but you better plan on working on it a bit. Before, during and after you are done with it. Fix the leaks before you use it! I cant see bucket very well but sure looks like it was digging some hard ground like ROCK. Check the stick out looks like they repaired it up top, check for cracks. Check ALL fluids and filters and change if need be don't give it a reason to go down. If it looks like it will be a project to keep together while you need to get your job done you may want to pass, but if you have plenty of time and patients, price is rite.
It's a good idea to check all main beam pins on those old Deere's check the bottom hinge and make sure it has very little play when the bucket goes into the ground check the top pin on dipper stick and watch for welds on this point as well as my old 690B started stress cracks on the bottom inside of the bend in the main beam these will show up as a rusty line or rusty stress crack about an inch inside the beam's flat under surface running length wise .All the welding in the world will not stop these cracks so let some one else own that problem .If the main beam is in good condition then look at the dipper stick for stress cracks three main spots on a 690B stick are top where it looks like it is welded that should be a gusset piece welded on where the paint is burnt off that is no big deal On to the second spot that is right at the top of the bucket ram area and the two pieces of metal are welded together this is where most of the old Deere's crack and this is a hard fix at best the third area is the main bucket bushing area and this is a fixable area but can run into dollars look the main beam and dipper over carefully remember if you see paint missing or hunks of metal welded on this is always a reason for the next guy to own it If you are in doubt ask the original owner about all welds and fix's and even post some picks on here if it looks welded or rusted or the paint is pealing we won't steer you wrong .Digitup.
