440I Power Steering Question

Post by foxd » Sun Feb 16, 2014 5:51 pm

Anyone familiar with the power steering on a 440I tractor?

When I purchased the tractor I noticed that it had a small catch in the steering when turning. I disassembled the power steering today and noticed that according to the service manual there appears to be a thrust pad missing and I can see where the rack has been catching on the back of the steering support case where the thrust pad should be. As luck would have it the thrust pad is no longer available from Deere.

My question is does the thrust pad just sit in the recess, shown in the attached photo, and is it held in only by pressure against it from the rack?

Thanks for any help!!

Dave,
Can't remember, too many years since I worked on one. I don't think you want to run without one, but might be hard to find. E-mail me the part number, and I will do some digging.

I hope I am ok on this now.
One of the shims M4228T is still available from Deere and I was able to get the diameter dimension off their website. I had the T&D shop at work make me a pad & shims and I spoke with a guy from Ohio who told me that the pad is only held in place by pressure from the rack.
I will assemble this weekend and keep my fingers crossed that all goes well.
M4227T is the number of the thrust pad itself.
Thanks!
