lubrication

Post by townlineterry » Wed Jul 23, 2014 8:31 am

Doing fluid changes, trannies, rear ends, hydraulics etc. is getting to awful pricey. I have usually used brand names like Pennzoil or Rotella or Bradpenn, which is a local brand. The Tractor Supply brand, Traveler is attractive because of the price, BUT, I worry about the quality.

Thoughts, opinions, other options?

I wouldn't worry about it.

From my perspective the key is whether they indicate on the label that they meet the specifications required for the type of fluid rather than the brand. My understanding is that many of these "off brand" fluids are made at the same plants as the name brands and the difference is just the packaging/marketing.

Having said that I look at the component I am lubricating when I make that decision- for my 2010 loader hydraulics I am not as concerned about using an off-brand that meets a JD 303 spec as the HLR transmission which I have been spending the extra money to get HyGard. That is my decision process.

Hi,

Another thing to consider is lubricants of today are much better than lubricants of yesterday. So, I run the local 90wt from our local oil company, Warren, in the trans and finals of the 420. It has to be a major upgrade from what Deere had in 1958.

But, in my 2008 5103, I am running Deere HyGard. I am not opting for the Warren hydraulic oil. The 5103 runs the HyGard in the trans and finals, which is also the reservoir for the hydraulics. I am not skimping on that one. It cost too much money. Now, in 50 years, it will be a different story.

Back to the 420, I use the HyGard I drained out of the 5103 after break-in. Heck, the 420 seeps out the front seals of both blade lift cylinders, but I have 15 gallons of HyGard to use up. ;)
