1959 440ic
Just bought this 1959 440ic for 1200 dollars and brought it home.
Anyone have any ideas of the pieces missing from this winch?
Other side of the winch. How rare is this winch? Did not see any other pics on this site with it.
Is this cage OEM for the year?
New to this site so I hope these pics turn out.
JD in Canada,
In 1959 OSHA (Oh S**t Here comes another government Agency) wasn't around yet to protect us from the dumb things poeple do(Darwinian Interuptus). I do not believe that was an option back then. Someone retrofitted it fron another piece of equipment for some protection from that cable on the back and maybe to keep a little snow off their head as it isn't anywhere near heavy enough to be a ROPS.
Looks like a good project!

Thanks for your input Chuck. Going to need some engine parts as the last owner decided to half dismantle it for no apparent reason then leave it like that for 3 years. Now the fun begins.
I know a fother son team that have parts for those old 440Is if you can get down to Chatsworth [below Owensound ] .His name is Robert Dier his son has taken the business over now but they have worked only on John Deere crawlers for the last 45 years and have a wrecking yard that is the envy of most of us .I live about sixty miles south of Owensound and have had several of my 350s worked on by Robert . I mostly have 550s and of the newer variaty Robert won't even look at anything newer or biger than a 450C. What kind of winch is that in the photo .That may be harder to find parts for .Digitup.
Hey I remember my dad going there for parts, last time was in 02 I think too get a grill front for the 420 loader. Was not the first time he got parts there, can't rember all the stuff he got but I know steering clutch plates, hydraulic pump, hood, rollers, pinion shaft ,probably more ,I do remember him saying they had everything you would ever need, good to have places like this.
58 420c w 61 blade and 3pth and pto,57 420c w loader,48 D,48 M,Allis D-15 and a Super Duty to haul these!!!!

Thanks Digitup, that's a bit far for me to venture. Do you have his phone number? I could get things possibly shipped then. I actually found an "old farmer" that has quite a stash of 420 and 440 parts in my area. The winch I believe is a #8A Gearmatic Winchdrum.
