Repair to transmission case

Post by CAR » Mon Jan 19, 2009 8:17 pm

I tried my hand at brazing cast iron this weekend. I did some research and found that you need to pre-heat the part to around 500 degrees before making the repair. So I dropped my case into a 30 gal. drum and heated with my propane burner. Took about an hour and a half to get it up to temp. Made the repair then wrapped it in an asbestos blanket and let it cool over night. The next day I drilled and tapped the hole. I figure if it held up to tapping it should be O.K. Here's a couple of pics.

You do good work. You will never know it has been repaired when the paint goes on!

Craig,
The one thing I would suggest is to use the longest bolt possible, so it goes all the way in to the bottom of the original threads.

Lavoy,
I had about 4 maybe 5 good threads at the bottom, I'll have to measure but I think the bolt that's in there now will do the trick.
Thanks

What exactly did you heat the part in that you got it up to 500 degrees

I used a 30 gal. steel drum with a steel plate for the lid. I basicly made an oven out of it, I wrapped an asbestos blanket around the drum to help insulated it then used a propane burner to heat it up. If the parts that need repaired are small enough you can heat them in an oven. My propane oven will heat up to 500 degrees, not sure about electric ovens.
