Thanks guys. I have some more options now with your ideas.
Dan,
I see that you have a one wire alternator on the picture. Do you have a picture where we can see the lower bracket. I just bought one alternator like yours and I have to fit it on the engine. That could give me an idea. Thanks

The final bracket. The book says to do it with 1/2 round stock . Maybe with the later housings not with mines. I modified it to fit. The bolts holes are 7/16. 13 inches center to center. So I cut the 1/2 legs and welded 2 smaller bolts.
A popular picture on this site . Both cases are like this. Final and transmission case seals were dropping oil in the clutches.
Left side busted tube, bearing carrier and throw-out bearing
Look at the weld on the shaft. Somewhere In the past, the differentiel internal splines stripped. So, they cut the shafts to remove 2 inches, welded back together so they can use the rest of good splines in the differentiel with a longer spring between shafts. VERY bad repair.
M2364T 55 teeth 420 Bull gear in the left final... Splines need a little work.
Plating on the pinion attacked by rust. I guess it's from sitting a while. The other half of the gear is like brand new.
Gearmatic 8A... It was supposed to only need a little work on the control handle according to the dear seller... Broken adapter case (where the bearing sits), bearing cut in half, brake band and everything else seized by rust, pto disconnected and yes control handle need a lever.
All these internal problems can only be discovered when dismantling the machine... We can doubt on clutches condition by operating the crawler, yes. But not these lazy repairs... Surprises that rise the project's price. Like I red somewhere here: If you don't pay for the right way now you'll pay twice later. I can not disagree! The project continues.

Great pics Iron popper. Those are definitely some chinsy repairs.
I was in the same boat with the bull gear splines as you. Mine was a little worse, when I pulled the axle out there were no splines left on the bull gear, they just broke apart.
I never tore the other side apart to see how they were, but I can tear it apart and if the splines are good I'd be willing to sell you the bull gear at a good price.
Let me know

Thanks Whiteclipse. Actually I brought the dissassembled finals to an ex-john deere mechanic who repairs old crawlers at his own shop. Just to be shure I don't put my money in the fire if I repair these. About the axle/gear he says he can save it with a bit of machining. I don't know what are his prices yet. Thanks for the offer. I keep that in mind as I have another 440 waiting to be repaired!

A bit more of work. I have to go through this gear fest.
Some signs of ''about to bust'' bearing. This is the small bearing of the output shaft. It is backwards compared to the manual. So, Instead of shimming behind the cup, They shimmed the cover...
Everything out of the case. I drove all the cups out. That's not as hard as I tought. I Just stopped counting the hours!
Nice clean case ready to be reloaded with gears.
I found a lot of metal chips in the case especially in the groove that carry oil to this passage. (behind the square cover where is the input shaft seal). Overall gears look fine. Maybe a previous breakdown or wear over 53 years of existence and abuse!
This is my ''stripped in the middle'' differentiel. I removed the ring gear. I will take out shims as well and be looking for this part. Then put back my ring gear on it, have 2 steering clutch drive shafts and be back in buiseness.

Some more great pics. Shimming all those and putting it back together is fun.
It took me a few times when I put everything in for the final time. I'm pretty sure it all only goes one way. If its wrong one thing hits something else.
It probably would have been easier if I was the one that took it apart, but somebody else did that.
Good Luck. Keep the good pics coming.
If I remember correctly the shimming of that square cover did seam odd but it ended up working out.

440 project...continues
So I moved into the new house with a garage of my own (wich is also a project!) and got some work done. I moved engine and tranny along with other parts to my new place. 10 hours ride back and forth.
transmission and engine in pieces. After a good cleaning these will be ready to go back in.
The inside of the 440 gas engine. Cylinder walls are like mirrors. I'll need to bring that to a machine shop to have the brush job done. Also needed: new bearings everywhere, piston rings, valves, guides, valve seals and seats, New gaskets and crank seals.
Unfortunately I found a chipped camshaft gear tooth. If someone has a good one let me know... Lavoy! Help!
the advance mecanism in the distributor. Along with all the wear in the engine and carbon on valves and seats if the advance is poor that's why I had so much backfires...
Countless hours remain until I push something again. I'll post more pics later. Have a good day.

It's been a while now I posted something about this project. It is still going on... at a slow pace. The fact is that the 440 playground is 500kM away from where I live and work. I didn't figure it would be a TOTAL rebuilt at the beginning. Fixing some issues was the plan. Now it is an overhaul!!
Everytime I can I pick up some crawler sections and bring them back in my recently purchased house. The garage is right next to the house. No more 1000kM trips will be done this winter for crawler fixing.
Many thanks to Lavoy for his parts and advices... for this great site and to the members on the board.
I spent most of the last weekend dismantling the trackframe. 2 good friends, Gin tonic, John Lee Hooker and others as Helpers... Every of the 16 5/8 bolts holding the crossbars were welded head to flange.. I guess that was the ancestor of red Loctite back then. Anyway, I took the decision to cut every bolt head off. Trying to ''redo'' the hex shape for a socket to fit on would take an eternity. It will be possible to weld a nut on what remains of bolts. 2 are broken flush. Serious source of heat from welding or torch set will be needed!! Here are some pictures:
According to my calculations I didn't exceed the trailer capacity of 2000lbs. It took 2 tanks of gas, 5 hours!
The challenge... X 4
2 out of 16 broken flush. I hope to save me from a drilling session
Rebored engine .045
Redone Head
Parts from Lavoy
This will be a fun part of the project.
I hope you like the pics. Big winter ahead!!!

I always say we cannot take enough pics of a project like this. It may look reduntant to some, but many will find valuable information in them.
Keep them coming!!

Looks like you are making steady progress like the rest of us. Let me know the difficulty of getting those broken bolts out. I think I'm going to have to take one side of my crossbar off due to loose/broken bolts and am dreading it.
When I took my rock guards off I think I had about 5 bolts break on each side, not too bad considering there's something like 16 per side.
Did they make the rear crossbar mounting different from early to late years. I'm 99% sure mine doesn't have the 4 bolts on each side in the rear. Mine is a tube that slides inside the part on the rails and has a type of huge clamp on the inside and outside. I'll try to get pictures when I get back home this weekend.

Tomorrow is going to be the take one for the broken bolts. Torch set, welder are ready. The plan is to weld Nut/washers on each broken bolt. Then let it cool. After we'll heat around the bolt and try with an impact to free it. It May take several attemps... A buddy of mine at the branch is used to that. His help will be priceless. I'll let you know how it ended!! I'll take some pictures.
You're right Ben. Mounting is different after serial 448001. Mine is 443712. I was looking in the 440IC parts manual for bolts size and we can see the change they made (page 80-81 of PC-573). Maybe the early bolt mounting often failed and they came out with this clamps setup. Because yours is a ICD, its mounting was with clamps from the factory. With these old machines We have to be mechanics and historian at the same time! hehehehe.

Well, It was not too bad. The front crossbar bolts were very easy. Because the threaded holes don't go through the whole mount (dead end), no dirt enters there if the pieces are well tight together. Threads were like new. We hit them with a big hammer, and remove them with vise grip easily.
Rear ones were stuck really bad. Here's what we did:
Cut the bolt flush to the flange. Weld a washer. Weld a Nut to the washer. Weld the inside of the nut to the bolt. That way it's more solid and the heat from welding is better transferred to the bolt. I tought we would weld on the remains of the bolt I manage to save (about 1/2 inch). NO!! My friend always do that for exhaust manifold studs and things like that. It works.
After we let it cool by itself. Then, with the torch, I heat the area around the bolt cherry red. Once it's red, we put water on it with a garden hose. This stress cracks the rust. Then with a 1/2 impact gun and some lube go forward/reverse in a battle of 1-2 minutes. Success. We did one side that evening. There's still a lot of work to do. Rock guards, rolls but that's doable.
I think I'll put red loctite on frame bolts and antiseize the rock guards and rolls bolts.
