Finally making some progress on the 440 ICD. The blower is rebuilt and resealed, should last longer than me.
Trying to keep everything as close to original as possible, thus the use of wire hose clamps.

that really looks great, don't be surprised if you feel a little extra grunt when pushing now that you will be getting full output from a nice tight blower.

Hey jd440 I'm not seeing the blower pics now for some reason. Could you rehost them please unless its a problem on my end.
I have something I want to check. I noticed on my blower today there is about a 3/8 hole just below where the rubber elbow connects on the blower. I assume this is where the later popular shut off flapper goes.
Thanks

Here is the pic of the GM 2-53 blower.
I have seen two styles of blowers. This one, which has a port for starter fluid, and the other style that has the butterfly shut off.

Hmm, thanks for posting that.
Where yours has that pipe plug below the rubber elbow mine is an open hole, but is threaded.
I'm wondering if that being open was causing the intermittent runaway problem. Doubtful but it still needs blocked off.
Is that where your saying you spray starting fluid?

The only thing I have come up with is that the threaded hole could be used for starter fluid injection. I prefer not to use it unless absolutely needed because it is bad for these engines.
I just rebuild my 2-53 and used the "N" series kit so I should not need starting fluid.
That hole being open would not create any runaway issues. The only thing it would do it allow dust and dirt to get in to the blower and engine.
A runaway is either injector issues or oil slipping past the blower seals. The oil will burn like fuel and it will run as fast as the amount of oil getting to it. Only way to shut down a runaway is to starve the air.

the "starter fluid hole" model was predominant in the boating world..
and i'll bet the PT boats used it as a "turboboost" to get the heck out of "there".

Thanks,
John Deere Old Construction Yellow - TY 25679. They are proud of that stuff, I bought mine before the price went up so high.
It is Valspar, not sure if TSC or other places that sell Valspar have this color but it would be worth checking in to.
It turned out real well and was easy to paint. It takes several light coats with the yellow. If you try to paint it too quickly it runs.

Thanks for the info. I tought there was a similar color in Caterpillar paint because I can have it at a lower cost. The orange touch in this old construction yellow makes a very good look on old crawlers. Deere is hard on price for this paint. Maybe I can buy one expensive can for sample and have it custom made in a local auto parts store... for less!

i got it direct from valspar, comes in box containing 2 gallon cans, and also got a box of 6 spray cans for touch-up,,, price was very fair...
tractor supply has this onhand , and Lowes but its special order.
the county i live in is banning certain paints, typical SNAFU.
and to ask the same question ,,,?? where did they find the blower elbow boot ?????
