440ICD Rebuild
Well guys, I've been working on the 440 for a little over a year now and figure its about time to put some pictures up. Its come a long way, considering last April I was digging through old hay in the barn in search of parts. About 25 years ago the transmission case cracked in two when my grandpa was using it. He tried to weld it but was unsuccessful. He found a parts crawler and got a new case. He tore the dozer completely apart to repair it but it never got put back together. So me needing another project decided to redo it. So far I've completely rebuilt the transmission and both final drives. I'll probably be ordering all new steering clutch components soon. Most all the parts are sandblasted and in primer. The main thing left is the old 2-53. It needs gone thru before I put it back in and I'm on the hunt to find someone worthy of doing that. In the mean time, I'll be ordering some yellow paint
Enjoy.

Enjoy.

A lot of work there! Do you have some help on your project ? For me, Not many people offer their help but they ask when it will be fixed because they have something to clear on their land!
The 2-53 will keep you busy for a while! Keep the pics coming.

Thanks for the comments guys. I have a little help. My dad is a good fabricator so if something needs welding or what not I go to him. It's fun and def. Time consuming. People don't realize the little things that you have to do like polishing gears and tapping holes. They think its sand blast and paint. Oh well hopefully I'll finish it in a few months.

Well it was somewhat fair weather for me this weekend so I decided to get some yellow paint on things before the weather gets bad for the winter.
Also, I got the undercarriage to my place to start working on it. I got the tracks off, but had to burn the master pins out. Their not very flexible at the moment. I also got the front idler off to begin rebuilding the hydraulic tensioner.
Unfortunately the undercarriage is the worse part of the machine, but I don't think its beyond repair. I'll need a few new bottom rollers and a lot of sandblasting sand lol.
Enjoy the pics.

Looking good!!
The tracks look good from the pics. Still some meat left on the grousers and the rails do not look nearly as worn as I have seen.
The toughest part for me on the rebuild is that part of me that says "hurry up" argues with that part of me that says "do it once and do it right." The "do it right" part wins most of the time, the reason I have been working on mine for so long.

Haha, I completely agree with you 2006. I want it done so bad, but then I say the same thing, "It'll be so much nicer if the extra time is taken and its done right."
My grandpa said he had it re-pinned and bushed before he quit running it, that's partly why they're so stiff. I'm going to get some diesel on them and work them some before re-installing.
The bad part is, the undercarriage is so rusty that all the bolts are just breaking, even with heat.
I'm going to get the other blade mount off and flip it over to get to all the bottom rollers off to inspect them. The rollers and motor should keep me busy through winter.
Thanks for the comments.

Well in your spare time tell us a little about "HY47N". Curious minds want to know? Looking Good.

It took me a second to figure out what you meant by the HY47N.
That would be my Dad's 48 Ford coupe. It's probably his favorite car. The unique part about it is that it has a 350 chevy with 4-speed and related chevy running gear. It definitely turns some heads.
Also in the garage, but not pictured is a 55 Chevy 210 (Also my Dad's).
69 Mustang Coupe (Mine) and my brothers work in progress, 68 MGB.
On the tractor side we have an 8N Ford (now mine, was my grandpa's) an Allis Chalmers WC (My Dad's, was my great grandpa's) and a Super A.
It seems we always have something were working on, but it sure keeps me busy and my mind somewhat clear.

Hey guys,
I've run into a bit of a problem. I got the undercarriage tore nearly completely down (pics below). I took some of the rollers off because 1. they are shot and 2. they are full of dirt inside.
I got one roller to come apart and cleaned up but the others I've not had the same luck. I'm trying to pull the end caps off because they are packed full of dirt. Do you guys have any good ideas for getting those end caps off. The one I got apart I just used a pry bar and smacked the shaft with a hammer and they came off. The others are on there good though, my dad even made a puller and it wouldn't budge them.

Hi Ben,
Your undercarriage is more advanced than mine Nice Work! About these bolts from another century... How easy was the removal?
For the rolls, I would change them. Deere have them but pricy. I bought one... 285$ Ouch! and found out a bunch of Used ones. Total for 8 rolls= less than one from Deere!
Good pics! Good Work!

Thanks for the comments iron popper.
The bolts were a pain, had to heat most of them and then there were about 5 per side that broke. (Those are the bolts that hold the rock guards that is).
The bolts for the rollers came out easier but some still needed heat. Didn't break any of those but one stripped the threads out when it was coming out.
Biggest road block now is the fact that I can't get those end caps off on the rollers. The seals are still good and the bushings are good, I just want that dirt that's packed in there out.
Hopefully someone can chime in with a good suggestion.
Motor is nearly ready to get a coat of primer. Need to wire wheel a few more spots and tap a few more holes. The undercarriage will probably be done until spring since it's outside, but really all it needs is sand blasted and some welding done on the rock guards.
Hopefully you've got some time at home and are making progress on yours.
