hi guys,
been looking around for a week and think i found the right place.
i just purchased a '55 40c 5 roller crawler. the plan is to use it for light logging and general duty around my property. i also have a '74 jd 1020 with a bucket, scraper and brush hog.
the main reason i got the crawler is because my woods are on the back of my place with a bit of bottom land to cross to get access to it. my 1020 doesn't seem to do very well back there!
my background is mostly electrical. i have been in the electric power line construction biz for 25 years, tracked vehicles are familar to me.
my other main hobby is antique harleys, i already see some of the same skill sets are used on the crawler.
anyway, here are some photos of the collection so far...

Welcome aboard John! You have some sweet stuff!! I love the Harley and the 1020 is also sweet. I have a 1520 that I just put a 3179 diesel in. Made a completely different tractor out of it. Anyway... Welcome >>> Leonard

thanks leonard and lavoy!
my crawler runs well and i need to look at my left steering clutch, i have a used set of disks and fibers and a brand new pressure plate. i was lucky enough to also get the setting gauge from the previous owner.
where is the best place to get a service manual?
do you have them available lavoy?

i found a manual from amazon for a reasonable price. it is on it's way...
meanwhile, i understand there are differences in the clutch fibers available and their thickness vs. how many you use in the assembly.
is there a magic number that seems to work well with the thinner ones? or is it purely a function of total assembled height of the clutch pack?
any insight or comments welcomed in advance!

ps, a buddy scored me a garwood winch off a wwII duck! this might prove interesting!

i recieved a reprinted manual. interestingly, there is no mention of the clutch setting gage??
so, i am getting ready to pull the left side and see what i got. i see in the book it mentions using a couple of drift pins to guide the housing off.
would a pair of extra long bolts temporarily installed in the housing work to support the weight of the housing as it was slid off?
thanks in advance to any insight...

Check this link out. It should help with the clutch setting tool.
