40C Project

Post by Derek » Mon Oct 02, 2023 7:42 pm

Hello all,

I finally hauled home a crawler after looking around for some time. A 40C with an Adkin blade. It runs decent but has final drive problems on the right and 2nd gear sounds terrible but worked well enough to get it on the trailer and did push dirt. The plan so far is to rebuild and paint it. The peeling off brushed and rolled on yellow over the green is driving me nuts.

I've opened up the finals and the right side is write off. Casing cracked, teeth have been welded up and ground on the bull gear and the pinion is no better. Even the right side steering clutch housing has cracks and the ear to the side frame was pulled off. Something went really wrong on the right side at some point in the life of the tractor. Time to start tracking down parts.

That would be great. What's a good time to call?

I've been out of the office a lot due to a death in the family, but have 14 hours of road time every week, so just leave a message, and I will call on the way back home.

The undercarriage is ok. The idlers have been welded up and machined but could use bushings. Bottom rollers are decent, tops are missing. Track chain needs to be replaced but pads are good.

Over the last few weeks I've been able to take it down to the track frames. Slowly tracking down and acquiring the parts needed to put it back together. The track frames have some cracks that need welding and I'm going to build up the area where the front idler was wearing in, and they also need a good sandblasting and wire wheeling. I'll also manufacture new upper idler shafts in the coming weeks.

I got some shop time this weekend. Started repairing all the shafts for the final drives. Almost every seal surface and bearing fit has to be spray welded and re machined.
