Barn find 440/420c?

Post by Versdevil » Mon May 25, 2015 8:35 pm

I found what i thought was a 440 dozer in a barn that had fallen down. From what i have been told it has sat since the 70's. Long story short i ended up getting it from the owner. Almost No wear on the 5 roller under carriage. Some one got the motor freed up a couple months ago. Runs like a top!! Hr meter says 479. Has a 4 way blade. The reverser doesnt work and i couldnt get it into reverse. Found a long bolt coming thru and stopping the shift rod from going all the way into gear. Now for the confusing part. The tag says 420c with a serial number of 105xx. I'm new at these old JD's but im pretty positive the chassis is a 440. It has the heavy nose piece. Its a really clean machine. Needs a water pump and some tlc. Ill try to figure out how to post a pic. I cant wait to get on it and play. [/img]

Hi,

There was a heavy nose cone option for the 420. It wasn't common but they were put on a few. The 420 dash is vertical all the way, top to bottom. The 440 is angled at the top where the gauges are.

Of course, it is possible someone put a 420 tag on a 440, but why?

Theres a pic. I have it tore down in my garage rite now. Water pump is bad. And changing filters and fluids. Quite the learning curve from my case 550 dozer.

Is it possible that somebody put a 420 engine in this and that's where he's seeing a "420" serial tag?
That looks like a full blown 440 to me.

Hi,

Yes, that is most decidedly a 440. The tag is on the bell housing. So, changing the engine does not swap the tag.

The number is in the 105 thousand range. The 420 did not get the differential reverser until 131309 (I got out the parts catalog to find the actual number of the changeover). The earlier 420 used the gear reverser.

The bell housing was new to go with the new reverser, ever if there was no reverser guts: The new setup was a separate bell housing and reverser housing. The old was all one piece (the gear reverser goes inside at the rear). That lets out changing both the engine and bell housing from a 105 thou serial 420. The early 440 and the late 420 match up in this regard.

Someone must have changed the tag. And, that always makes me think something was stolen somewhere along the line. Either this machine, or somone knicked this 440 tag for another stolen machine so this one wound up with a replacement from a scrapped 420.

Sometimes one sees tags for sale just because units undergoing restoration are missing their tags. At this point in time it really does not matter. The only issue being figuring which serial number range this 440 fits into for parts. And that can be told by the major casting part numbers it has.

I'll find out more when i meet the previous owner in person this summer. The reverser does not seem to work. What do u think the price range would be to fix it? If i try to use it i hear a lot of rattleing. Should have the water pump on it today and oils changed. Then its time to find out what else it needs. Thanks for the info!!!

Does it have the oil fill/dipstick on the right hand side of the motor? Or does it have just the dipstick on the left hand side?

You are using the clutch when you try to use the reverser aren't you??

The oil fill/dip stick is on the right hand side as im sitting on it. Yes i was using the clutch when trying to use the reverser. I can feel it "click" twice but it wont move. Just got it back together and ran it for an hr or so out back in the mud/water. Tht got the tracks loosened up. It studdered for a minute but then cleared up. Feels a little weak in the left side clutch. Had it slip a couple times. Other than that no issues yet.

Hi,

The rattling and not moving with the reverser in R sounds bad. Like maybe the spyder gears are in trouble....

Of course you always have the transmission R as long as the reverser forward clutch is ok. And, it sounds as though it is.

Seems to be ok it pushes a blade full of dirt in forward. Had th shorten up a bell housing bolt to get it into reverse. But i think thats why i ended up getting the dozer. The other guy looking at it probably thought the trans was junk.
