My 1st Crawler - 440

Post by ddaxe » Tue Oct 13, 2015 10:41 am

I appologize for introducing myself in the techno section.. by mistake.. I finally got around to making a video of the machine I picked up.. so you guys can have a peek at her and to get some feedback.. I have to say it runs pretty good.. it has some issue (but then how many don't).. I done a few little jobs around my farm with it.. as a kind of evaluation.. it steers well.. starts right up everytime.. no hydraulic hunting.. after looking at some of the other members resto jobs.. has got me thinking of doing a full on resto to mine.. as part of the deal was a second complete 440 for parts.. sans the blade.. being a railroad mechanic.. I'm sure that will lend itself well to tackling a project of this nature.. I have restored many muscle cars over the years... besides .. its something different.. and I'm up for the challenge... with your help in the techno section.. I'm sure any problem I run into will have already been solved.. in some manner... again.. tks in advance for the web page.. and any insight given... enjoy this little clip..

Adjusters are a long ways out, pins and bushings must be worn. It's got 1010 rails on it, so they have been replaced at one time. Missing one upper idler, but like you said, they all need something. Good starting point, you will have fun with it.

Thanks for the feed back.. Lavoy... I hope to get better acquainted when the time comes for getting parts... your observation of it having a 1010 u/c would explain why the parts machine's u/c looks sorta different.... I have been thinking about disassembling the other's u/c as starting point.. with possibly the frame rails.. I had noticed the missing top idlers but it's not much of a concern.. as the other machine has both.. and the trailer load of parts had 2 that looked in pretty decent shape (but need rebuilding)... I'm guessing there will be a lot of things that need attention for a machine that probably had a rough life. Hopefully.. I can build a decent crawler from the 2....

First order of business is to get factory parts and service manuals, not I & T unless you have a bird cage that needs a liner!

I have the parts manual... but yes..agreed.. a service manual is another of the 1st tools I will need... if you can put me onto one.. I would purchase it... I'm not quite sure what you mean by I & T... and no.. no bird cage to be lined.. lol.. I've posted in your manuals post in your "for sale" section...

Welcome to the site. Looks like you have a good starting point for entering the world of crawlers. As Lavoy stated, getting a good service manual is money well spent. Read it through, and you'll have a good grounding in how your machine is designed to work. That said, JD chose to append their manuals, so that you may need to refer back to an earlier manual for some particular detail. I've found that a specific question to the board here will usually get a useful response and reference from a manual I don't own, so no problem. Best wishes. Paul

Hi,

I+T is a 3rd party manual printer. They copy, under license, but somehow manage to leave about half the information out. Which half do you guess you always need?? :P

As Lavoy pointed out, good for birdcage liners. Also handy dandy in the outhouse (dual purpose there)..... ;)

Places like Tractor (lack of) Supply (for crawlers) carry them:

Ah OK... I getcha... I got burned like that once thinking I was getting a 68 Camaro manual... and it turned out to be a factory assembly manual... was still very informative... just it was missing a lot of the finer details...

Follow up: I bought my 420 service manual through Ebay, but John Deere also offers them - somewhat pricey, but original. I bought the hard copy and put it in a binder then photocopy the pertinent pages as needed so that the grease stains don't harm the original. The .pdf versions can be used the same way. In hindsight, I could have saved the money I spent on the "owners manual". The info contained there can be found in the service manual. Paul

Hi,

Except for the attachments, like loaders and dozers. Then, you need the owners manuals since they are also the service and parts manuals....

Looks like a pretty decent find.
