Tracks v Wheels

Post by Stan Disbrow » Sun Nov 29, 2015 2:54 pm

Hi,

Y'all know, but I'll tell you anyway..... ;)

Neighbors have a nice spot down at the river. There is a fishing cabin and a party pavillion. But, a rain run-off 'crick' passes between. So, they have a bridge made from two utility poles with decking to cross the crick.

A tree decided to whack the bridge. Decking now knidling, and the force knocked one end of both poles down into the water.

They were trying to pull out the poles today. First with a JD300 TLB, then added a 45 HP cat-2 tractor. No go on either pole.

Of course, the issue is grip. Not HP. Neither two or four wheels gripped enough.

So, I crawled down on the 420c, and said: step aside. They scoffed. Either tractor is larger, and they both have 45HP or so. I had 32 when new. Probably 24 now. Or less. :P

But, tain't about power. Is about grip.

What was *really* funny was I grabbed hold of the fatter, heavier pole first. And spun track. For about one chain revolution. They laughed. A lot. Then, as y'all have guessed, she dug through the wet, slippery, mulchy mess on top. Then she grabbed real dirt.

No muss. No fuss. No snap. Nothing. But we moved. And that pole slipped right on up outta there. Easy, peasy.

They stopped laughing a lot faster than I pulled.

I was in 1st gear, of course. It *is* aptly named (!)

After I pulled both out, I used the blade and steered them both right on into the woods, leaving the ends where we can yank them back out should a new use for them pop up.

Lots of fun. :)

Hi,

Yes, they did. But....it was on the far side of the crick, which passes thru a 20 foot deep ravine. So, I really couldn't get to it right then. I went back to the house and put the crawler to bed and switched to the Gator and went back down the other road to the other side. :)

Now we will have to re-bridge, but just a footbridge since we don't need to drive machinery across.

Hi,

Yeah!

Or, something like that, anyway. A cable suspension bridge anchored by trees away from the edges.

Hi,

Sorry, no. No one had a cam. Even a cell one. You know what happens to cells around equipment.....crunch.

Besides, just an old crawler with an old log chained to the drawbar.....

What would have been fun is a video of first one tractor, then two, failing to move it, just spinning wheels in a cloud of dirt and diesel smoke. Then, one little old crawler put putting away slowly pulling it out of the mudbank. :)

Go something like "2 fancy little tractors stuck in the mud, one little old crawler pulling them out, priceless!"

I too enjoyed your story Stan. Let me add that how you tell it makes or breaks a story. You had better add "storyteller" to your resume!
