I've seen that picture in J.R. Hobbs book "The little giants". The wheels were put on for shipping to where the under carriage was put on.

Hi,

Oh, one of a series of pics of the then-brand-new Dubuque plant and the then-brand-new model MC. :)

That being a shot of the almost finished MC with the dolly wheel.

Stan

Edit: changed from M to MC since that is actually what the pic is of. An MC coming off the main line and needing to be driven to another building where they will mate the tractor to the crawler u/c.

Hi,

You want to build an MC wheel tractor? Well, that *would* be different at tractor shows! :)

Hi,

I only have one crawler and I also think it would be cool to have. Well, lots of poor MCs out there with trashed u/c but otherwise still good. And a ton of those wheel tractor hubs and wheels. Only part one would have to make is the castoring dolly wheel on the front. ;)

If you look closely at the front of the rear wheel and just under the sod pan it looks like a 2nd caster wheel?

Hi,

Yeah. Might be. Two wheels on a bar attached to the bumper...

I think that set up would have worked reasonably well back in the day. Even today we have plenty of implements from that era that were raised and lowered by mechanical means; sprockets, chains and cams and whatnot.

My family raised potatoes and the two dolly wheel arrangement would have allowed the tractor to really crank around and go down adjacent rows as it is evident, that is a row crop tractor!

Unfortunately we have lost a lot of farm land because of those old tractors too. With no posi-traction, four wheel drive or articulation like we have today, the "wetter" fields that horses used to slog through just fine became unusable and they went back to forest. Counting growth rings in trees, this happened in the 1920's or so.

Here is an old "Orchard Harrow" that still works and without hydraulics to lift and lower it.

Hi,

The nicest thing about using this as an MC Row Crop is the stick-steer turn would be a lot smoother than one on a M made by cranking the wheel and using one brake.

I think I want one, too...

We have 4 MC's torn down right now and will be limited on building anymore as we will be out of useable MC undercarriage. We are trying to go 100% original which is a big challange and is basically a 100% disassembly and then picking the best parts for reassembly, some with tool bar hydraulics and some without. We are dealing with a few clutch housings that have been drilled or cut for adjusting the clutches, welded frames and cross members.

I told my Dad about the transport between factory kit and we may just try building one. He has horded a few more MC's that we won't be able to get original undercarriage and may have to get by with 40 tracks.
