420 Final Drive Assembly

Post by Jimmy in NC » Sun Dec 03, 2006 9:41 pm

I'm finally getting arround to posting a few pictures of rebuilding my final a few weeks ago. After dragging this project out for over a year now.. it looks like it'll be moving again in the next week or two.

First is a picture of the bottom cover that had to be repaired where at some point the bull gear had gotten loose and worn through the side of the cover.

The next picture is of the quill cap that sets the preload on the axle bearings... the cap I had was beaten pretty badly when the axle came loose earlier in life and was cracking arround the cork ring. Thanks to Lavoy a replacement was only a phone call away.

Image

And now to start assembly...

A rebuilt axle from Lavoy since mine was badly worn and the flange was totally destroyed from misuse of a gas axe earlier in it's life... probably the same person that felt shiming of the bearings was foolish.....

Next cleaning up all the case surfaces.

What's this.. no threads.. no problem... a minor setback as we helicoil one of the axle retainer bolt holes.

Now to finally start putting parts back in the case..

What to do next???

Ohh yeah.. the top shaft!

Seal first..

Image

Now the pinion gear...

Now the input shaft.

Setting the preload..

Victory celebration!

And for anyone wondering what makes a great final drive transport / work stand / hunting vehicle...

It's a M274A1 and we also have an M274A5 "Mechanical Mules"

The pictures are of my dad who has been the greatest help as I sort this project out.

Jimmy,

I truly enjoyed the pictures and the narratives as you rebuilt the final. I have yet to experience that "joy", but I am sure it will happen down the road.

Happy Holidays!

Jimmy,

Enjoyed the pix. Looks like you did a good job on the final.

I bought a Gator last year for hauling stuff around and don't know how I got by all these years without it.
