UPDATE JD 64 Tilt Cylinder Rebuild Completed

Post by JD440ICD2006 » Wed Mar 14, 2007 4:23 pm

All back together with a new boot in place. It is dry as a bone with no fluid leaks, we will see how long that last.

That looks to be similar to what I need for my 612 blade on a 1010. Deere wants $115 for part AU10336U, is that what you have? What is the real purpose of the boot (other than being original) since dirt can still get on the cylinder wiper seal?

Thanks
Paul

Paul,

That is the part number for the leather boot. They are a bit pricey but that is the highest price I have seen on one. I did not pay that much. What I see that it does, other than being original, is that it keeps dirt from filling and packing the box where the cylinder goes. The ram rod and seal do get dirt on them but that can be cleaned or washed off easily after use.

If you get enough dirt and crud, or a rock down in the area surrounding the tilt cylinder, it can crush the barrel when the dozer tilts. If you look at the 6 way on a 1010 or 2010, they have a large sheet of steel that is above the cylinder to keep crud that rolls over the top of the moldboard from getting on or around the cylinder. I swear that I say a plate of the same size and shape on a 440 that was bolted on instead of welded like on the 1010/2010. I have always wondered about copying one and doing just that.

That makes sense. My 1010 6 way blade does have that large plate welded on top over the tilt cylinder unlike the picture of the 6 way 440 blade. I will go ahead and get the boot anyway.
Thanks

Hi,

I've seen 440's with the plate over the tilt cylinder. I think it was a late production change on Deere's part. Dad used to make up and add them to machines that came into our shop for service, if they didn't already have them. ;)
