RT FINAL INSIDE CROSSMEMBER BOLT REMOVAL

Post by lastchancegarage » Sun Apr 08, 2007 9:01 pm

Hi all,
Someone not long ago was talking about removing the inside crossmember bolts and not being able to get any torque on the breaker bar. I ran into that this afternoon. Here's how I managed to get around it.
The pictures were taken at the end of the operation so I was already done with the breaker bar. The rachet shown was fine once the bolts had started turning. Progress was slow but better than none.

Here's how I kept the rachet on the bolt.

Once the torque had let up, I shifted to the rope to speed things up. You can put your foot on the frame rail and really pull. Just release the rope, wait for the rachet clicking to stop and pull again. It turned out to work better than I first thought.

...check out the brake rod bow. just one more repair to the list... :(

Thanks to Lavoy's posting I was able to rig up this sling using an old theater cable pulley. Works great.

So whoever you are, I hope you can use this or at least get some ideas on getting around the bolt removal process. Good luck.

Scott

Ah, the things we have to come up with to work on these old beasts. Not to mention the industrial size Band-aid box that is required.

You have to love the subliminal optimism of the headset still hanging on the throttle like they'll be needed any day now.
