It's A Schram, not a Deere but still interesting

THis was for sale on eBay awhile back. There used to be one of these at an old surface mine near where I worked. I would like to know more about them. Apparently 2 cylinders are engine and 2 are compressor.

Sorry if it's too off topic to be of interest.

Hi,

Is this the power unit for a pneumatic drill? The one that used the same rails as the old Terratrac I used to have? I can't tell exactly from the photo, but it sure looks familiar.....

I think I know the ones you are talking about, and I think they are quite a bit bigger. This one looks about the size of a newer Struck.

Hi,

Yes, I think you're right. This is pretty small. I didn't have a good reference for size at first, as it's yet another poor old thing in the weeds missing half it's bits. But, then when I just looked at it again a little harder, I see the electric starter and that gives me a pretty good size reference.

Still, it'd be cool to have in my collection of things sitting in weeds that's missing half their parts. I like the idea of a 2-cyl engine, 2-cyl air compressor mounted on tracks. It'd be cool even if it can no longer propel itself as one could rig it as a tracked trailer pulled by a crawler... :)

I surely wish that I would have bought the one across from where I used to work. I think that they wanted $300 for it, this was 1985, so 300 was a little bit more, but still. It had some sort of a front attachment on it, surely it was a blade but I just can't quit thinking that it was a very small bucket. Anyhow, I remember the round tank and it was a Schram, but it never crossed my mind that there was an air compressor incorporated in the thing or I would have bought it for sure. I have a friend who is in a nursing home for a year or so now, his shop days are over but he built several volkswagen beetle engine air compressors--2 pumping and 2 driving. Anyhow... I am glad I wasn't out of line posting something a little different.

So far as the size of the thing, I have never been a small framed person and I've gotten a little bit bigger since '85 but back then that was one of the reasons I didn't buy it because I thought if I'd get the thing running, me riding on it would really look silly, sort of like an adult riding a Honda 50 mini bike..... meaning it was the size of a medium garden tractor.

While I am writing, do all 440 ICDs have an intake air blower or was it an option? I am looking through a parts catalog that came with mine and it shows one but I can't find it on mine. Mine starts and runs, doesn't seem like it's bursting with power though. Is mine missing something it needs?

All GM/Detroit two stroke diesels used a roots style blower to scavenge the cylinder and get all burnt gasses out before the compression stroke started. To the best of my knowledge only some marine diesels closed the exhaust valves before the piston covered up the intake ports and could actually be called supercharged. Not sure about the later ones with a turbocharger mounted on the intake to the blower. It should be on the right side of your 2-53 and dirven off the gear train on the back of the engine.
I once rented an air compresser that was built around a 390 cu in (I think) pherd engine. One bank was engine and one bank was compressor. It sure made air in a hurry and would outsupply an air hammer.

Hi,

I wouldn't worry too much about the oddball nature of the cute little crawler. Yes, the site says it's all about Deeres, and we do chat about those 99% of the time, but then we do have this tendency around here to go crazy over just about anything with tracks on it. Like this one. ;)

As far as small goes, I have one of those original Struck mini dozers, which *is* a garden tractor with tracks. You sit on the very back, and your feet wind up at the front. The thing is useless. You can move soft dirt with it, and not much of it at a time at that.

If you try to dig with it, the blade gets caught and the thing scissors at the blade frame pivot point and all you wind up doing is jacking the crawler into the air. All you can really do is pull things, and not very heavy things at that. As I say, useless, but than it *is* a crawler and rather cute to boot.

This thing is even cuter *and* it'd be a lot more useful as a mobile air compressor that that silly little Struck could ever be. ;)

That sure looks like a Ford flathead V-8 engine with the front and rear cylinders used for the engine and the center two for the air compressor function...similar on the opposite bank I'd guess. Water pump with large (5/8") belt and ignition wire conduit indicates --1948 or earlier. Two sense worth... Mora
