Thanks guys. Yes she is a 1959 model. I have some questions for you Deere experts.
We adjusted the clutches yesterday before using her in the woods. I noticed that when I was driving out to the woods in 4th gear it didn't want to turn good. When I pulled the sticks the track would lock up but it kinda bogged down the motor. I originally thought the motor clutch was bad.
I took her in the wood and put her against a stump. In 1st and 2nd gear she would spin the track with no slipping so I think the motor clutch is good.
When backing the machine turns good both ways. Going forward it seems like it boggs it down like something is slipping. I have never owned a crawler with a reverser. Does anyone think that the reverser is bad? Is there anything I can adjust or check to see if it is out of whack? I noticed a there is an oil port on the side. What kind of oil does it take? Is there any other test I can do to check the reverser?
I don't believe that the clutches are bad it turns real nice by barely moving the stick. Since I don't know much about reversers i thought I might ask you guys for a hand.
I also found that the hydraulic pumps is leaking out of the side. The gaskets must be bad in there.
I will have to try and find some of them. Can you still get those from deere?
I also found where someone had welded a crack on the transmission case.
I have never seen one of these machines broken here has anyone else? I would think if it were a loader machine it might break here but I was surprised to see this. I am going to take that inspection cover off the tranny today and try to see if there is anything broke in there.
The most interesting thing I found was the gear shift cover. For some reason sombody took and welded a piece of metal over the cover so reverse could not be used. I thought that this machine should be a 5 forward speed 1 reverse speed tranny. I took it off and put it in reverse and she moves fine. I wonder why they did that?

Hi,
There is a really bad issue you can cause by running the reverser in reverse *and* the tranny in reverse to gain an additional forward speed.
Basically, it will eat up the spyder gears in there.
So, most people read the dire warnings in the manual and on the label on the battery box door, and promptly installed a lock out bolt on the transmission shift gate!
Sometimes, the dealers would do this. I remember my dad doing this on every machine he rebuilt way back when. If the customer didn't like the added bolt, they were free to remove it, of course. But, they got one even if they didn't want it!
Oh, and don't go around pulling on things in the reverse direction, as in with a chain hooked to the blade. Only put a load on with the reverser in the forward direction (push with the blade, pull with the drawbar) or you will kill the reverser in the same manner as the 'double reverse for forward' trick.....
Later!
